What Does Ezekiel 10:1 Mean in the King James?
Then I looked, and, behold, in the firmament that was above the head of the cherubims there appeared over them as it were a sapphire stone, as the appearance of the likeness of a throne.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The Hebrew uses one seeing-root for “I looked,” “appearance,” and “appeared,” making the throne’s disclosure part of the act of seeing itself.
THE MEANING
You meet a scene in which the throne is already present above the cherubim, though it reaches you through layers of likeness and appearance. What you perceive is a center of authority shown through an image that remains mysterious.
THE ROOT
וָאֶרְאֶה
vaʾerʾeh
GROWS FROM
ראה
רָאָה (raʾah): to see, look, perceive.
“looked” in this verse is vaʾerʾeh. The same root reappears as מַרְאֶה (marʾeh, “appearance”) and נִרְאָה (nirʾah, “appeared”). English distributes one Hebrew seed across looking, appearance, and appearing, so the seeing and the disclosure echo one another.
ALSO GROWS
roʾeh: One who sees; seeing.
רֹאֶה
This form keeps the seeing-root attached to a seer, like the first-person look that opens the verse.
marʾeh: Appearance; vision.
מַרְאֶה
The verse uses this form for the throne’s appearance, linking what is seen to the act of seeing.
nirʾah: Appeared; was seen.
נִרְאָה
This form describes the throne as it comes into view, completing the verse’s echo of the same root.
הָרָקִיעַ
ha-raqiaʿ
GROWS FROM
רקע
רָקַע (raqaʿ): to beat out, spread out.
“firmament” in this verse is ha-raqiaʿ. The expanse carries the image of something beaten or spread outward. Here it forms the visible space above the cherubim, with the throne appearing above it.
ALSO GROWS
raqaʿ: To beat out; spread out.
רָקַע
This verbal form gives the action associated with the expanse word.
riqquʿa: A beaten-out sheet or plate.
רִקּוּעַ
This related form names material beaten into a broad sheet, carrying the same spread-out image.
אֶבֶן
ʾeven
GROWS FROM
אבן
אֶבֶן (ʾeven): stone.
The spelling also holds אָב (ʾav, “father”) + בֵּן (ben, “son”), a father-and-son echo inside the stone. The material in the vision carries a compact family image within its letters.
ALSO GROWS
ʾavanim: Stones.
אֲבָנִים
The plural form carries the same stone-word through the vision’s material image.
ʾavnei: Stones of.
אַבְנֵי
This construct form keeps the stone-word joined to what it supports or describes.
THE PATTERN
The enthroned presence appears through a layered field of visible images that disclose it without exhausting it.
And they saw the God of Israel: and there was under his feet as it were a paved work of a sapphire stone, and as it were the body of heaven in his clearness. And above the firmament that was over their heads was the likeness of a throne, as the appearance of a sapphire stone: and upon the likeness of the throne was the likeness as the appearance of a man above upon it.And he that sat was to look upon like a jasper and a sardine stone: and there was a rainbow round about the throne, in sight like unto an emerald.THE THREAD
And they saw the God of Israel: and there was under his feet as it were a paved work of a sapphire stone, and as it were the body of heaven in his clearness. The Hebrew for “they saw” in Exodus comes from רָאָה (raʾah, “see”), the same root behind Ezekiel’s “I looked,” “appearance,” and “appeared.” Exodus places sapphire beneath the feet; Ezekiel places its likeness above the cherubim, linking the visions through both seeing and stone.
