This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The body can sit before the prophet while the heart remains seated before its idols.

You can be physically present before a voice and still have your inner allegiance elsewhere. The elders truly come and sit before the speaker, but that posture does not disclose what occupies their hearts. The words that follow reveal the gap: their hearts hold idols.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

Physical nearness to a spiritual voice means the heart is already turned toward it.

וַיֵּשְׁבוּ

vayyeshvu

GROWS FROM

ישב

y-sh-b

To sit, settle, or dwell.

English “sat” names a posture; the Hebrew root also carries settling and dwelling, so the elders take up a place before the speaker. Yet the next verse shows that occupying this place can coexist with hearts occupied by idols.

ALSO GROWS

yashav: To sit or dwell.

יָשַׁב

The same root broadens sitting into dwelling, giving their posture the sense of taking a place before him.

moshav: A seat, dwelling, or settlement.

מוֹשָׁב

This branch makes the root’s connection between a place to sit and a place to dwell explicit.

לְפָנָי

lefanay

GROWS FROM

פנה

p-n-h

To turn or face toward.

“before me” in this verse is lefanay. The Hebrew expression carries face-language: they sit before the speaker’s face, not merely at a location in front of him. The same face-language returns when they place a stumbling block before their own faces, exposing how outward position and inward orientation can diverge.

ALSO GROWS

panim: Face, front, or presence.

פָּנִים

This is the face-word within the expression translated “before me.”

panah: To turn or turn toward.

פָּנָה

The related verb adds the idea of orientation to the image of facing someone.

Visible nearness to a sacred voice can coexist with an inner allegiance elsewhere.

Wherefore the Lord said, Forasmuch as this people draw near me with their mouth, and with their lips do honour me, but have removed their heart far from me, and their fear toward me is taught by the precept of men:
Isaiah 29:13 · KJVTheir mouths approach while their hearts remain far away, making outward nearness an incomplete picture of inward orientation.
But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.
1 Samuel 16:7 · KJVThe visible appearance does not reveal what the heart contains.
And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?
Luke 6:46 · KJVThe spoken posture of calling someone Lord can remain separate from the inward response their words would show.
Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their heart, and put the stumblingblock of their iniquity before their face: should I be enquired of at all by them?
Ezekiel 14:3 · KJV

The Hebrew face-language in “before me” reappears in “before their face.” They sit facing the prophet while a stumbling block stands before their own faces, and idols occupy their hearts.
