What Does Ezekiel 14:20 Mean in the King James?
Though Noah, Daniel, and Job, were in it, as I live, saith the Lord GOD, they shall deliver neither son nor daughter; they shall but deliver their own souls by their righteousness.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The same verb names both the rescue that cannot pass from parent to child and the rescue each person receives through their own alignment.
THE MEANING
Even Noah, Daniel, and Job cannot deliver another person; their righteousness reaches only their own living selves. The verse speaks now as a boundary on proxy rescue: a child’s life is not delivered by a parent’s alignment.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Someone else’s righteousness guarantees my rescue.
THE ROOT
יַצִּילוּ
yatsilu
GROWS FROM
נצל
natsal
To snatch away or rescue from danger.
“deliver” in this verse is yatsilu. The verse uses this root for both the rescue that cannot reach another person and the rescue of one’s own life. Deliverance is an extraction, and the verse draws a sharp boundary around whom it reaches.
ALSO GROWS
hitsil: He rescued or delivered.
הִצִּיל
This form names the act of pulling someone out of danger, giving the verse’s deliverance the force of extraction.
wenitzaltem: You shall plunder or strip away.
וְנִצַּלְתֶּם
In another form, the root describes taking something away; here it also carries the sense of forceful removal from danger.
צִדְקָתָם
tsidqatam
GROWS FROM
צדק
ts-d-q
Rightness, justice, alignment.
“righteousness” in this verse is tsidqatam. The verse connects deliverance to the alignment of the person being rescued. Set beside “their own,” this root makes that alignment personal: it cannot be inherited by a son or daughter.
ALSO GROWS
tsedeq: Rightness or justice.
צֶדֶק
This branch shows righteousness as a state of right order, not a transferable family possession.
tsaddiq: A righteous or aligned person.
צַדִּיק
The related word names the person by their alignment, clarifying why another person’s standing cannot be passed along.
נַפְשָׁם
nafsham
GROWS FROM
נפש
n-p-sh
The living self, person, or life.
The word rendered “souls” names the living person themself, not a detachable part carried separately from them. What is delivered is the whole living self, and the verse says that rescue belongs to that self.
ALSO GROWS
nephesh: A living self, person, or life.
נֶפֶשׁ
This is the core sense behind “their own souls”: the rescued one is the person themself.
nephesh: Appetite or desire.
נֶפֶשׁ
The same word can name a person’s appetite, keeping “soul” grounded in the concrete, desiring life of a person.
THE PATTERN
A person’s life and accountability cannot be transferred through kinship or another person’s standing.
The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers: every man shall be put to death for his own sin.None of them can by any means redeem his brother, nor give to God a ransom for him:For every man shall bear his own burden.THE THREAD
The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him.The same Hebrew roots for “soul” and “righteousness” recur: each living self is named alongside the alignment that belongs to it. The son and father cannot exchange either one’s standing or consequence.
