What Does Ezekiel 19:4 Mean in the King James?
The nations also heard of him; he was taken in their pit, and they brought him with chains unto the land of Egypt.

THE KEY
A name carried among nations is no shield when the hands of power close around its bearer.
THE MEANING
You can be widely known and still be caught in another’s grasp; recognition does not secure freedom. The movement into Egypt, Mitzrayim, the constricting narrows, holds capture and confinement together.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that visibility or formidable strength makes a person untouchable breaks here: renown does not prevent someone from being seized and carried away.
THE ROOT
נִתְפָּשׂ
nitpas
GROWS FROM
תפשׂ
To seize, catch, or take hold of.
The Hebrew verb carries the physical force of grasping: the figure is caught in the nations’ pit and taken in their hold. English “taken” gives the event, while the root also connects capture with the act of handling something.
ALSO GROWS
tāphaś: To seize, catch, or take hold of.
תָּפַשׂ
This verb names the grasping action contained in the verse’s “taken.”
tōphəsê: Those who handle or take hold of.
תֹּפְשֵׂי
Jeremiah uses this form for those who handle the law, extending the same root’s grasping image from a captured person to something people hold and handle.
THE PATTERN
When a person is seized, the captor determines where that person is carried and held.
In the ninth year of Hoshea the king of Assyria took Samaria, and carried Israel away into Assyria, and placed them in Halah and in Habor by the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes. And they that had laid hold on Jesus led him away to Caiaphas the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were assembled. As for Saul, he made havock of the church, entering into every house, and haling men and women committed them to prison.THE THREAD
The priests said not, Where is the LORD? and they that handle the law knew me not: the pastors also transgressed against me, and the prophets prophesied by Baal, and walked after things that do not profit. The same Hebrew root תפשׂ appears in “they that handle the law”: here the figure is seized, while there people take hold of instruction. The shared root lets “taken” carry the concrete force of being grasped.
