This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

Yerushalayim bears the language of twofold wholeness, yet here it is the furnace-site where a whole people, called dross, are gathered.

You meet a gathering with no shelter in it: the whole people are called dross and brought into Jerusalem. The next verse identifies the city as a furnace, where the gathered mass is melted in anger and fury. The name carries wholeness while the scene holds the violence of the melting.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The assumption that divine gathering always means rescue or protection is undone here: this gathering brings the people into judgment and melting.

קֹבֵץ

qovets

GROWS FROM

קבץ

q-b-ts

Collect, bring together.

“gather” in this verse is qovets. The verb means collecting into one place; it carries no promise that the gathering is for safety. In the next verse, the same root gathers metal and people into a furnace, revealing the destination as part of the act.

ALSO GROWS

qibbuts: Gathering; collection.

קִבּוּץ

The noun makes the root’s action visible as an assembled mass, the shape of this gathering.

qevutsah: Group; collection.

קְבוּצָה

It shows people gathered as a collective, fitting the verse’s severe claim about the whole people.

יְרוּשָׁלַיִם

Yerushalayim

GROWS FROM

שלם

sh-l-m

Be whole, complete.

“Jerusalem” in this verse is Yerushalayim. The name carries shalom, wholeness, in a twofold form, while this verse brings the people into a furnace. The name and scene collide: the city bearing wholeness is where people called dross are gathered.

ALSO GROWS

shalom: Wholeness; completeness.

שָׁלוֹם

This is the wholeness carried in the city’s name, sharpened by the furnace that fills the scene.

shalem: Whole; complete.

שָׁלֵם

The adjective gives the root’s sense of intactness, set against the people being melted as dross.

A divine gathering can begin judgment, and its destination reveals what the gathering is for.

As they gather silver, and brass, and iron, and lead, and tin, into the midst of the furnace, to blow the fire upon it, to melt it; so will I gather you in mine anger and in my fury, and I will leave you there, and melt you.
Ezekiel 22:20 · KJVThe same gathering verb brings metal and people into the furnace, making collection the first movement toward melting.
I will also gather all nations, and will bring them down into the valley of Jehoshaphat, and will plead with them there for my people and for my heritage Israel, whom they have scattered among the nations, and parted my land.
Joel 3:2 · KJVThe gathered nations are brought to a place of judgment, showing that being assembled does not itself mean being sheltered.
Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.
Matthew 13:30 · KJVThe tares are gathered for burning and the wheat for the barn; their destination reveals what each gathering means.
As they gather silver, and brass, and iron, and lead, and tin, into the midst of the furnace, to blow the fire upon it, to melt it; so will I gather you in mine anger and in my fury, and I will leave you there, and melt you.
Ezekiel 22:20 · KJV

The same Hebrew root gathers the people into Jerusalem and then gathers the metals and the people into the furnace. That echo reveals what this gathering leads toward: Jerusalem is the furnace-site, not a promise of safe arrival.
