What Does Ezekiel 29:5 Mean in the King James?
And I will leave thee thrown into the wilderness, thee and all the fish of thy rivers: thou shalt fall upon the open fields; thou shalt not be brought together, nor gathered: I have given thee for meat to the beasts of the field and to the fowls of the heaven.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The verse strips power down to a body no community gathers and the living world consumes.
THE MEANING
A person or power cut off from human gathering lies exposed in open land, handed to the creatures of earth and sky as food. The verse holds judgment in its full violence: the body is not recovered but consumed.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that status can make a body untouchable is undone here: the one who is not gathered becomes food for beasts and birds.
THE ROOT
נְתַתִּיךָ
netattikha
GROWS FROM
נתן
n-t-n
Give, set, or place.
The Hebrew root carries the sense of placing something into another’s hands or care. Here, “given” is starkly concrete: the body is set out as food for the creatures of the land and sky.
ALSO GROWS
mattanah: Gift
מַתָּנָה
This branch shares the root of giving; here the act of handing over is grim, with the body assigned as food.
netinim: The given ones; temple attendants
נְתִינִים
The word shows how the root can describe people assigned to a place or service, underscoring the sense of being set somewhere.
תִּקָּבֵץ
tiqqavets
GROWS FROM
קבץ
q-b-ts
Gather or collect into a group.
“gathered” in this verse is tiqqavets. The verse denies gathering twice, using קבץ (qavats, gather together) alongside אסף (asaph, gather in or collect). The doubled denial leaves no human return for the fallen body: it is neither collected nor assembled back into community.
ALSO GROWS
qibbutz: Gathering or collection
קִבּוּץ
This form makes the root’s gathering sense visible; the verse denies that collection.
qevutzah: Group or cluster
קְבוּצָה
The root can name a group brought together, the very human association the verse says does not happen.
חַיַּת הָאָרֶץ
chayyat ha’aretz
GROWS FROM
חיה
ch-y-h
Live or be alive.
The word rendered “beasts” comes from חיה (chayah, live): it names living creatures of the land. The image sets the fallen body against the creatures that remain alive and feed upon it.
ALSO GROWS
chayyah: Living creature or animal
חַיָּה
This branch shows that the beasts are named as living beings, sharpening the contrast with the fallen body.
chayyim: Life
חַיִּים
The same root names life itself; here, other life consumes the body left exposed.
THE PATTERN
When human protection falls away, the body is left exposed to the creatures of the land and sky.
And thy carcase shall be meat unto all fowls of the air, and unto the beasts of the earth, and no man shall fray them away. And the carcases of this people shall be meat for the fowls of the heaven, and for the beasts of the earth; and none shall fray them away. That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great.THE THREAD
The dead bodies of thy servants have they given to be meat unto the fowls of the heaven, the flesh of thy saints unto the beasts of the earth. Both verses use נתן (natan, give, set, place), and Psalm repeats the sequence of bodies, food, birds, and beasts. There the exposed bodies belong to mourned servants, opening Ezekiel’s image into a recurring horror that reaches people beyond the powerful.
