This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

Here, beauty is not separate from growth: the branching abundance that makes the tree fair is also what makes it envied.

The verse speaks to you now: your beauty can be the visible shape of what branches outward from you. That abundance draws others’ gaze, and the gaze can carry envy even inside God’s garden. Flourishing and being envied appear together, without either canceling the other.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that being admired means being met with goodwill: visible flourishing can awaken envy instead.

וַיְקַנְאֻהוּ

wayqanneʾuhu

GROWS FROM

קנא

q-n-ʾ

To be jealous or zealous; to show ardent regard.

“envied” in this verse is wayqanneʾuhu. The same root spans zeal and jealousy, so this is a charged response, not mere notice. The tree’s flourishing draws the other trees’ attention into envy.

ALSO GROWS

qinʾah: Jealousy, envy, or zeal.

קִנְאָה

This noun carries the same range of ardent regard, showing how closely envy and zeal are joined in Hebrew.

qannāʾ: Jealous or zealous.

קַנָּא

This related form names the quality behind the trees’ intense response.

יָפֶה

yafeh

GROWS FROM

יפה

y-p-h

To be beautiful or fair.

“fair” in this verse is yafeh. The verse ties the tree’s beauty directly to its multitude of branches. Its fairness is the visible shape of its abundance, not something added apart from its growth.

ALSO GROWS

yaphah: To be beautiful or fair.

יָפָה

This verbal form presents beauty as a quality that shows itself.

yofi: Beauty.

יֹפִי

This noun names the beauty that the verse links to the tree’s many branches.

Visible flourishing can awaken envy in those who see it.

For he had possession of flocks, and possession of herds, and great store of servants: and the Philistines envied him.
Genesis 26:14 · KJVIsaac’s abundance is named first, followed by the Philistines’ envy.
The wicked shall see it, and be grieved; he shall gnash with his teeth, and melt away: the desire of the wicked shall perish.
Psalm 112:10 · KJVThe wicked see the flourishing of the upright and respond with grief.
For he knew that for envy they had delivered him.
Matthew 27:18 · KJVEnvy becomes the motive behind the action taken against Jesus.
For he had possession of flocks, and possession of herds, and great store of servants: and the Philistines envied him.
Genesis 26:14 · KJV

The Hebrew word translated “envied” comes from the same root in both verses. Genesis names the abundance first and then the envy; Ezekiel shows that same response among the trees of Eden.
