What Does Ezekiel 33:22 Mean in the King James?
Now the hand of the LORD was upon me in the evening, afore he that was escaped came; and had opened my mouth, until he came to me in the morning; and my mouth was opened, and I was no more dumb.

THE KEY
The passage repeats the root “open” for one mouth, first as the LORD’s action, then as the mouth’s state, so silence is met as something released.
THE MEANING
The LORD’s hand is upon you before the word arrives; the silence around you is not the whole story. The mouth opens through an opening received, and by morning the speaker is no longer mute. The verse holds space for silence that is real now without treating it as the final state.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A closed mouth means the word has vanished or silence is permanent.
THE ROOT
וַיִּפְתַּח
vayiftaḥ
GROWS FROM
פתח
פתח (pataḥ) means to open or make an opening.
The Hebrew repeats this root: first the LORD opens the mouth, then the mouth is opened. The related word מַפְתֵּחַ (maphtēaḥ, key) carries the sense of what opens a way through; here, speech is released rather than manufactured.
ALSO GROWS
petaḥ: Opening; entrance.
פֶּתַח
An opening is also an entrance: the mouth becomes a way through which speech can pass.
maphtēaḥ: Key.
מַפְתֵּחַ
A key makes an opening possible; this branch echoes the verse’s emphasis on access being given.
THE PATTERN
God opens what has been closed, making a way for speech, hearing, or response.
But when I speak with thee, I will open thy mouth, and thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; He that heareth, let him hear; and he that forbeareth, let him forbear: for they are a rebellious house.O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise. And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.THE THREAD
But when I speak with thee, I will open thy mouth, and thou shalt say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; He that heareth, let him hear; and he that forbeareth, let him forbear: for they are a rebellious house. The same root, פתח (pataḥ, open), appears in the LORD’s promise to open Ezekiel’s mouth. Beside 33:22, the repeated word makes the opening itself the hinge: the voice returns as the LORD’s speech reaches the mouth.
