What Does Ezekiel 33:8 Mean in the King James?

When I say unto the wicked, O wicked man, thou shalt surely die; if thou dost not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand.

This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

Here, warning is light cast across a dangerous path: silence leaves the speaker answerable for the blood, while the hearer remains answerable for the crookedness.

When God names the danger, the voice entrusted with the warning bears responsibility to make the path visible. The person who stays on the crooked course dies in their own crookedness, while the one who withholds the warning bears the blood at their hand.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It undoes the belief that another person’s choices make silence innocent: the hearer owns the crookedness, and the speaker still answers for withholding the warning.

לְהַזְהִיר

lehazhir

GROWS FROM

זהר

z-h-r

Shine or be bright; in this verb form, make clear and so warn.

The verb lehazhir (⁨לְהַזְהִיר⁩), meaning to warn, grows from ⁨זהר⁩ (z-h-r), a root also carrying the image of shining. The warning makes danger visible; it does not choose the path for the hearer, and the verse gives the speaker a separate accountability for silence.

ALSO GROWS

nizhar: warned, made cautious

נִזְהָר

Psalm 19:11 uses this root for the servant being warned, joining instruction with the light that helps someone see danger.

zohar: brightness, radiance

זֹהַר

Daniel 12:3 uses this word for radiance; its shared root reveals the image of warning as bringing what is hidden into view.

מִדַּרְכּוֹ

middarko

GROWS FROM

דרך

d-r-k

Tread or step; a course made by treading.

The Hebrew behind “from his way” pictures a trodden course, not merely an abstract idea. The warning addresses a direction already being walked and makes its danger visible.

ALSO GROWS

derek: way, road, course

דֶּרֶךְ

This is the path the warning addresses: a course someone is already taking.

darak: to tread, step

דָּרַךְ

The shared root pictures a way as ground formed by steps, giving “from his way” the force of leaving a trodden course.

A danger made visible gives the hearer a chance to turn, while the one entrusted to speak remains accountable for silence.

Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.
Psalm 19:11 · KJVThe same warning root connects being warned with instruction that shapes the path someone takes.
Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins.
Isaiah 58:1 · KJVThe voice is told to expose what is hidden, making the people’s danger plain rather than leaving it unspoken.
Brethren, if any of you do err from the truth, and one convert him; Let him know, that he which converteth the sinner from the error of his way shall save a soul from death, and shall hide a multitude of sins.
James 5:19-20 · KJVIntervention can turn someone back from the error of their way before its course ends in death.
When I say unto the wicked, Thou shalt surely die; and thou givest him not warning, nor speakest to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand.
Ezekiel 3:18 · KJV

This verse repeats the same root ⁨זהר⁩ (z-h-r), meaning to shine and to warn, and the same charge about blood at the speaker’s hand. It also names the warning’s aim: that the person on the dangerous path may live.
