What Does Ezekiel 37:19 Mean in the King James?
Say unto them, Thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will take the stick of Joseph, which is in the hand of Ephraim, and the tribes of Israel his fellows, and will put them with him, even with the stick of Judah, and make them one stick, and they shall be one in mine hand.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The two sticks become one because they are gathered into one hand.
THE MEANING
Joseph and Judah are gathered into one stick and held together in God’s hand. The verse speaks now to the reader: what appears divided can become a shared whole without either part disappearing. Their unity rests in God’s hand, not in the pieces’ ability to hold themselves together.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Division is not permanent, and unity does not require one side to disappear.
THE ROOT
אֶחָד
echad
GROWS FROM
אחד
One; brought together as a single whole.
The same word names both the single stick and the tribes being one in God’s hand. The verse moves from joined form to shared holding: unity is not just a new shape, but a relation held together.
ALSO GROWS
iḥed: United or made one.
אִחֵד
This related form makes explicit the unifying action carried by the promise that the two sticks become one.
achdut: Unity; oneness.
אַחְדוּת
This related noun names the shared wholeness that the verse pictures as one stick in one hand.
חֲבֵרָיו
chaverav
GROWS FROM
חבר
To join, bind, or associate.
“fellows” in this verse is chaverav. The tribes are already described as Joseph’s companions before the sticks are joined. Their relationship is present in the word itself; the verse gathers those already associated into a visible unity.
ALSO GROWS
chaver: Companion or fellow.
חָבֵר
This is the noun behind “his fellows,” naming a relationship of association.
chibber: Joined or connected.
חִבֵּר
This verbal form makes the root’s joining sense plain, echoing the act of bringing the sticks together.
THE PATTERN
Distinct parts become one when they are gathered into a shared bond.
Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh. That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;THE THREAD
Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.“One” in both verses is אֶחָד (echad), the same Hebrew word. Genesis lets you see the shape of Ezekiel’s image: distinct parts are joined into a shared whole.
