THE KEY
The verse turns readiness outward: the one who is set must also keep watch over the company gathered to him.
THE MEANING
The verse speaks to you as someone whose readiness includes a charge over the people gathered around you. It joins being prepared with keeping watch, so readiness reaches beyond your own condition to what has assembled around you.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that being prepared is only a private state; here, readiness includes the company gathered under your watch.
THE ROOT
מִשְׁמָר
mishmar
GROWS FROM
שׁמר
To keep, watch over, guard.
The word rendered “guard” comes from שׁמר (shamar, to keep or watch over). The root connects guarding with staying watchful: the gathered company is placed under a continuing watch.
ALSO GROWS
shomer: Keeper, one who keeps watch.
שֹׁמֵר
This keeper-form shows the guard as someone actively watching over the assembled company.
mishmeret: Charge, watch-duty.
מִשְׁמֶרֶת
The same root can name the duty itself, making the watch over the company an assigned charge.
הִכֹּן
hikkon
GROWS FROM
כון
To be firm, be established, set in place.
“prepared” in this verse is hikkon. The command first says to be established and then to make ready, using two forms of כון (kun, to be firm or set in place). Preparation is both a settled stance and an active arranging, leading into the watch over the gathered company.
ALSO GROWS
hekin: Prepare, make ready.
הֵכִין
This causative form echoes the command to prepare for oneself.
nakhon: Firm, established, ready.
נָכוֹן
This form carries the sense of being set in place that underlies “be thou prepared.”
הַנִּקְהָלִים
han-niqhalim
GROWS FROM
קהל
To gather, assemble.
The word rendered “assembled” is a gathering-word: the company is gathered around a center. That gathering sharpens the next command, joining the assembly to the watch placed over it.
ALSO GROWS
qahal: Assembly, gathered company.
קָהָל
It names the kind of company the verse describes as assembled to you.
hiqhil: Gather, assemble together.
הִקְהִיל
This form makes the act of bringing people together explicit, echoing the gathered company in the verse.
THE PATTERN
What is placed in someone’s care becomes a charge to keep watch over it.
And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.And they shall keep his charge, and the charge of the whole congregation before the tabernacle of the congregation, to do the service of the tabernacle. While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled.THE THREAD
Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The keeper in this line is שֹׁמֵר (shomer, keeper), from שׁמר (shamar, to keep or watch), the same root carried by “guard” in Ezekiel. The paired words for slumbering and sleeping make the shared watchfulness vivid: the keeper stays awake.
