What Does Ezekiel 44:2 Mean in the King James?

Then said the LORD unto me; This gate shall be shut, it shall not be opened, and no man shall enter in by it; because the LORD, the God of Israel, hath entered in by it, therefore it shall be shut.

This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The gate’s closure is not evidence that nothing happened there; it is the lasting mark that the LORD passed through.

The closed gate speaks now as a boundary whose present state carries the LORD’s passage: he has entered, so no human enters by that way. Its closure makes the passage itself part of what remains visible.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The verse undoes the assumption that a way used by God is therefore available for human use: here, the LORD’s passage is exactly why the gate is closed to everyone else.

סָגוּר

sagur

GROWS FROM

סגר

s-g-r

To shut, close, or enclose; in a causative form, to hand over or surrender.

The word for shut belongs to a root whose family also describes shutting someone in and handing someone over. Closure here is an active boundary: the LORD’s entry has defined who may pass through this gate.

ALSO GROWS

vayyisgor: He shut in

וַיִּסְגֹּר

Genesis 7:16 uses this form for the LORD shutting Noah in, showing the same root can describe a boundary enclosing those within it.

hisgir: Handed over; surrendered

הִסְגִּיר

This form extends the root’s sense of closure to placing someone under another’s power, echoing how a closed boundary determines who controls passage.

The LORD’s presence or authority sets the boundary of who can pass and when.

And they that went in, went in male and female of all flesh, as God had commanded him: and the LORD shut him in.
Genesis 7:16 · KJVThe same root describes the LORD closing the boundary around Noah, making closure an act that governs who remains within.
And Moses was not able to enter into the tent of the congregation, because the cloud abode thereon, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.
Exodus 40:35 · KJVWhen the LORD’s presence fills the tent, Moses cannot enter; presence determines access.
And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write; These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth, and no man shutteth; and shutteth, and no man openeth;
Revelation 3:7 · KJVThe holder of David’s key opens and shuts beyond anyone else’s power.
And they that went in, went in male and female of all flesh, as God had commanded him: and the LORD shut him in.
Genesis 7:16 · KJV

Genesis 7:16 uses the same Hebrew root ⁨סגר⁩ (s-g-r, shut or close) when the LORD shuts Noah in. That branch shows closure can enclose and preserve; here, the gate is closed against human passage, and in both verses the LORD governs the boundary.
