What Does Ezekiel 6:13 Mean in the King James?
Then shall ye know that I am the LORD, when their slain men shall be among their idols round about their altars, upon every high hill, in all the tops of the mountains, and under every green tree, and under every thick oak, the place where they did offer sweet savour to all their idols.

THE KEY
The altar becomes a witness: the place named by sacrifice is surrounded by the slain the idols could not preserve.
THE MEANING
The reader meets the LORD’s claim in the sight of the slain among idols, around altars, and beneath the trees where offerings were set before them. The idols receive devotion, but they do not preserve the bodies lying beside them. Knowing the LORD comes through that exposed failure.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that an object of devotion, or a ritual performed before it, can guarantee the worshiper’s safety.
THE ROOT
מִזְבְּחוֹת
mizbeḥot
GROWS FROM
זבח
Slaughter or sacrifice.
“altars” in this verse is mizbeḥot. The altar’s name grows from a root for slaughter and sacrifice. Here that ritual ground is surrounded by the slain, so the word’s sacrificial language meets the bodies in the scene.
ALSO GROWS
zāvaḥ: to slaughter or sacrifice
זָבַח
The verb names the act associated with the altar, while the verse places the slain around those places.
zevaḥ: a sacrifice
זֶבַח
The offering and the bodies occupy the same landscape, exposing what the idols did not preserve.
וִידַעְתֶּם
vidaʿtem
GROWS FROM
ידע
To know or perceive.
“know” in this verse is vidaʿtem. Yadaʿ names knowing by perception, and this verse ties that knowing to a scene made visible. Recognition of the LORD comes through what lies before the reader, not through information alone.
ALSO GROWS
daʿat: knowledge or perception
דַּעַת
The verse’s “know” belongs to a word family that holds knowledge as perception.
hôdîaʿ: to make known or declare
הוֹדִיעַ
The scene makes known the failure of the idols to preserve those devoted to them.
חֲלָלֵיהֶם
ḥalaleihem
GROWS FROM
חלל
To pierce or wound; the same consonants also form a verb meaning to profane or defile.
The word for the slain holds the image of the pierced or wounded. Its consonantal echo with the verb for profaning brings bodily death and desecration together in the scene: the worship place is marked by the bodies its idols could not protect.
ALSO GROWS
ḥālāl: a pierced one or slain person
חָלָל
This is the word behind “their slain,” naming the bodies among the idols.
ḥillēl: to profane or defile
חִלֵּל
The shared consonants echo desecration in a place where the slain lie among the objects of devotion.
THE PATTERN
The power people trust is exposed when it cannot act, answer, or preserve life in the moment of trouble.
They bear him upon the shoulder, they carry him, and set him in his place, and he standeth; from his place shall he not remove: yea, one shall cry unto him, yet can he not answer, nor save him out of his trouble. And it came to pass at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and said, Cry aloud: for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is pursuing, or he is in a journey, or peradventure he sleepeth, and must be awaked. And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk:THE THREAD
So the house of Israel shall know that I am the LORD their God from that day and forward. Both verses use וִידַעְתֶּם / יֵדְעוּ (yadaʿ, “know” or “perceive”), from the root ידע. Here recognition rises from the slain among the idols; in Ezekiel 39:22, the people know from that day onward. The shared root makes knowing a recognition brought into view by what unfolds.
