What Does Ezekiel 6:8 Mean in the King James?
Yet will I leave a remnant, that ye may have some that shall escape the sword among the nations, when ye shall be scattered through the countries.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The remnant is not outside the scattering; it is what remains alive within it.
THE MEANING
The verse speaks now of God leaving life within dispersion: the sword causes real loss, yet some remain among the nations. Their survival does not undo the violence or make the scattering whole again.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The belief that devastation leaves nothing behind: the verse names people who survive the sword and remain within the scattering.
THE ROOT
הוֹתַרְתִּי
hotarti
GROWS FROM
יתר
y-t-r
To remain over, be left, or be in excess.
“I will leave” grows from the root of what remains and what is left over. The verse presents the remnant as life still present after the sword and scattering, not as proof that the violence never happened.
ALSO GROWS
yether: Remainder; surplus.
יֶתֶר
The same root names what is left after something has been taken away, opening the word “remnant” from within the verb “leave.”
yitron: Advantage; profit.
יִתְרוֹן
This branch shows that the root can also name what remains as a gain, though the verse does not call the survivors’ suffering a gain.
פְּלֵיטֵי
peleytei
GROWS FROM
פלט
p-l-t
To escape, slip away, or survive.
The escapees are named by a root that holds escape and survival together. They are survivors of the sword who remain among the nations, so escape here does not mean the scattering is over.
ALSO GROWS
palit: A fugitive; a survivor.
פָּלִיט
This noun names the person who gets away, matching the verse’s “some” who survive the sword.
peletah: Escape; those who escape.
פְּלֵיטָה
The related noun names the escape itself, keeping the focus on lives that make it through the violence.
THE PATTERN
Even amid judgment, violence, or dispersion, a remnant can remain alive within what has been broken.
Except the LORD of hosts had left unto us a very small remnant, we should have been as Sodom, and we should have been like unto Gomorrah. And God sent me before you to preserve you a posterity in the earth, and to save your lives by a great deliverance.Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.THE THREAD
And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day.Ezekiel’s “I will leave” and Genesis’ “was left” grow from יתר (y-t-r), the root of what remains. One names a remnant among scattered nations; the other shows Jacob alone, letting the shared root hold survival and solitude together.
