What Does Ezekiel 8:1 Mean in the King James?
And it came to pass in the sixth year, in the sixth month, in the fifth day of the month, as I sat in mine house, and the elders of Judah sat before me, that the hand of the Lord GOD fell there upon me.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The hand of the LORD falls on Ezekiel while he is at home, so this encounter begins with divine arrival, not human ascent.
THE MEANING
Your ordinary room remains within reach of encounter: a moment with others seated before you can become the place where the Lord’s hand rests upon you. Here, the initiative belongs to the hand that falls, while Ezekiel is simply seated.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The encounter need not wait for a sanctuary or a solitary retreat; this verse places it in a house, with Judah’s elders sitting before Ezekiel.
THE ROOT
וַתִּפֹּל
wattippol
GROWS FROM
נפל
To fall or descend.
“fell” in this verse is wattippol. The hand itself is the subject that falls: revelation arrives and lands on Ezekiel while he sits at home. The same root can describe a downfall elsewhere, but here its movement is toward contact, the divine hand comes upon a person.
ALSO GROWS
naphal: To fall or descend.
נָפַל
This is the root verb in the verse; the hand descends upon Ezekiel rather than Ezekiel reaching up for it.
mappalah: Ruin or downfall.
מַפָּלָה
This related form shows the root’s range: falling can become collapse, while here what falls is the LORD’s hand making contact.
THE PATTERN
The LORD’s hand comes upon people within the work unfolding around them, making divine agency present in the moment.
And the hand of the LORD was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel. And the hand of the Lord was with them: and a great number believed, and turned unto the Lord.THE THREAD
The word of the LORD came expressly unto Ezekiel the priest, the son of Buzi, in the land of the Chaldeans by the river Chebar; and the hand of the LORD was there upon him. This verse repeats the same image of the LORD’s hand upon Ezekiel, now beside the river Chebar. The recurring Hebrew word יָד (yad, hand) ties the house scene to an ongoing mode of contact through which the vision meets him.
