What Does Ezra 2:58 Mean in the King James?
All the Nethinims, and the children of Solomon’s servants, were three hundred ninety and two.

THE KEY
“Nethinims” means “given ones,” so this count names people whose very title carries the act of being given into service.
THE MEANING
The verse keeps the “given ones” and the children of Solomon’s servants within the count. Their service-marked identity does not make them anonymous: the text gives their group a definite number, 392.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The assumption that people identified through service do not have a place in the community’s record falls away here: they are named and counted.
THE ROOT
נְתִינִים
nĕtînîm
GROWS FROM
נתן
n-t-n
To give, set, or place.
English carries “Nethinims” as a title but hides its root in נתן (natan), “to give, set, or place”: the name means “given ones.” The count therefore names people whose identity already bears the idea of being assigned to service; Ezra 8:20 makes that service explicit.
ALSO GROWS
natan: To give, set, or place.
נָתַן
This verb is the seed of “Nethinim,” connecting their title with the act of being given or assigned.
mattan: Gift or present.
מַתָּן
This related noun carries the same giving into what is given, opening the title’s sense beyond a label.
netinim: Given ones; assigned people.
נְתִינִים
This is the verse’s own title: the people are counted under a name that already marks them as given.
THE PATTERN
The whole includes those assigned to service and members who might otherwise be overlooked.
And thou shalt give the Levites unto Aaron and to his sons: they are wholly given unto him out of the children of Israel. Also of the Nethinims, whom David and the princes had appointed for the service of the Levites, two hundred and twenty Nethinims: all of them were expressed by name.Nay, much more those members of the body, which seem to be more feeble, are necessary:THE THREAD
And thou shalt give the Levites unto Aaron and to his sons: they are wholly given unto him out of the children of Israel. Here, נתן (natan) appears openly as “give” and “given”; in Ezra, the same root is folded into the title “Nethinim.” One verse names the act, while the other counts the people whose name carries it.
