This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

Wholeness begins as a direction before it is a place: scattered people gather “as one man” toward Jerusalem.

You can still be among many separate places and move as one: the gathering begins before everyone occupies one place. The people converge toward Jerusalem, a name that carries the language of shalom, wholeness. Unity appears here as shared movement toward wholeness.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie that unity requires everyone to start from the same place dissolves here; the gathering begins while the people are still in their cities.

וַיֵּאָסְפוּ

wayye'asefu

GROWS FROM

א־ס־ף

⁨אָ סַף⁩ (ʾ-s-p): gather in, collect, bring together.

The verb pictures more than people meeting: it shows them being gathered into a whole. They begin in separate cities, yet their shared movement makes them one before they reach the destination.

ALSO GROWS

asif: ingathering; harvest

אָסִיף

Harvest is what has been gathered in, giving the verse’s movement the sense of collecting what is dispersed.

me'assef: one who gathers or collects

מְאַסֵּף

This branch makes visible the act of drawing many pieces into one collection.

אֶחָד

echad

GROWS FROM

א־ח־ד

⁨א־ח־ד⁩ (ʾ-ḥ-d): one; unite or bring into oneness.

“As one man” is more than a count: echad names the gathered people as one collective whole. Their many starting places remain visible even as the verse speaks of their unity.

ALSO GROWS

echad: one

אֶחָד

This is the word that describes how the people gather: many people, one shared movement.

achdut: unity; oneness

אַחְדוּת

This later Hebrew word makes explicit the unity compressed into echad.

יְרוּשָׁלַיִם

Yerushalayim

GROWS FROM

ש־ל־ם

⁨ש־ל־ם⁩ (sh-l-m): wholeness, completeness, well-being, the root family of shalom.

“Jerusalem” in this verse is Yerushalayim. Yerushalayim carries shalom, wholeness, in its name: the people move toward wholeness as they move toward the city. Its -ayim ending echoes a paired note, letting the destination sound like twofold wholeness rather than only a place on a map.

ALSO GROWS

shalom: wholeness; well-being

שָׁלוֹם

The city’s name carries this root’s sense of wholeness as the people converge toward it.

shalem: whole; complete

שָׁלֵם

This branch makes the destination’s deeper sense concrete: the movement points toward what is whole.

Scattered people become a gathered whole when they share a direction.

The Lord GOD which gathereth the outcasts of Israel saith, Yet will I gather others to him, beside those that are gathered unto him.
Isaiah 56:8 · KJVThe scattered and the outcast are brought into a larger gathering.
A Song of degrees of David. Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!
Psalm 133:1 · KJVUnity appears as people dwelling together in one shared life.
And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place.
Acts 2:1 · KJVMany people come together with one accord in one place.
The Lord GOD which gathereth the outcasts of Israel saith, Yet will I gather others to him, beside those that are gathered unto him.
Isaiah 56:8 · KJV

Ezra’s “gathered” and Isaiah’s “gathereth” share ⁨אסף⁩ (asaph; to gather in). Isaiah makes the scattering explicit: the same gathering brings the outcast into a larger whole, the movement Ezra sees taking shape toward Jerusalem.
