What Does Galatians 2:7 Mean in the King James?
But contrariwise, when they saw that the gospel of the uncircumcision was committed unto me, as the gospel of the circumcision was unto Peter;

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The gospel is entrusted across two communities without becoming two messages.
THE MEANING
A distinct field of service does not divide the message itself. The gospel is entrusted toward the uncircumcised through one messenger and toward the circumcised through another; the distinction names where it travels, not a second gospel. Their callings are different, while their trust is shared.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the belief that distinct audiences require distinct truths, or that a calling is valid only when it looks identical to someone else’s.
THE ROOT
πεπίστευμαι
pepisteumai
GROWS FROM
πιστ
pist
trust; be persuaded
“committed” in this verse is pepisteumai. The perfect passive form says the speaker has been entrusted and remains in that entrusted role. Its root family also carries trust itself, so the commission is a relationship of trust, not just a task handed over.
ALSO GROWS
pistis: trust, confidence
πίστις
The same root family names the trust that holds the entrusted messenger to the message.
pistos: trustworthy, reliable
πιστός
This branch shows the character expected of one who carries what has been entrusted.
εὐαγγέλιον
euangelion
GROWS FROM
ἀγγελ
angel
announce; messenger or announcement
The gospel belongs to the word family of messengers and announcements, keeping it concrete as news carried from one person to another. The verse holds one message in view as it reaches two different communities.
ALSO GROWS
angelos: messenger
ἄγγελος
The gospel travels through messengers, which fits the verse’s pairing of distinct entrusted callings.
angellō: announce, report
ἀγγέλλω
This branch brings out the announcing carried by the gospel as it moves between people.
Πέτρῳ
Petro
GROWS FROM
πετρ
petr
stone; rock
Peter’s name carries the image of a stone. The verse names his commission as personally entrusted to him, alongside Paul’s distinct commission.
ALSO GROWS
petros: stone
πέτρος
This is the form of the name Peter and keeps the person’s name-nature in view.
petra: rock, bedrock
πέτρα
This related word extends the stone image carried by Peter’s name.
THE PATTERN
One message can be entrusted to distinct messengers for distinct peoples without being divided.
And he said, It is a light thing that thou shouldest be my servant to raise up the tribes of Jacob, and to restore the preserved of Israel: I will also give thee for a light to the Gentiles, that thou mayest be my salvation unto the end of the earth. But the Lord said unto him, Go thy way: for he is a chosen vessel unto me, to bear my name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel:For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.THE THREAD
But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts. The same trust-root appears in “put in trust,” with the gospel itself as what is entrusted. That echo presents Paul’s and Peter’s distinct commissions as trusts carrying one message.
