This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

You can place yourself under the law and still fail to hear what it is saying.

Wanting to place yourself under instruction does not mean you are hearing what it says. The question exposes a split between the position you choose and the testimony the instruction carries. The words already familiar to you ask whether you are receiving their meaning or merely standing beneath their authority.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The false belief is that submitting to scripture’s authority automatically means understanding or receiving its message.

ἀκούετε

akouete

GROWS FROM

ἀκου-

akou-

To hear, listen, or give heed.

“hear” in this verse is akouete. The Greek echoes the idea of being under (hypo) the law with hypakoē, a word for obedience formed from the idea of hearing under. Paul’s question links posture to listening: wanting to stand beneath instruction does not mean you have received what it says.

ALSO GROWS

akoē: Hearing or a report.

ἀκοή

The same word family makes hearing the means by which a message reaches you.

hypakoē: Obedience; listening under.

ὑπακοή

This branch joins hearing to response, exposing the gap between wanting the law’s authority and attending to its instruction.

νόμον

nomon

GROWS FROM

νομ-

nom-

An established order or norm; in this context, instruction.

“law” in this verse is nomon. Nomos carries the sense of instruction that orders life. The question turns that instruction into a witness: its meaning may challenge the very position you want it to authorize.

ALSO GROWS

nemō: To allot or distribute.

νέμω

This related verb gives the word family an association with what is assigned or apportioned.

nomizō: To regard, consider, or treat as customary.

νομίζω

This branch shows how an established norm can be treated as accepted custom, even when its instruction has not been heard.

Instruction is received by hearing its substance, a hearing that reaches into response.

Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD:
Deuteronomy 6:4 · KJVThe call to hear opens with receiving the instruction as a whole, not merely standing under its authority.
But be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.
James 1:22 · KJVJames shows that hearing the word reaches beyond listening to the response it forms.
(For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.
Romans 2:13 · KJVThe verse distinguishes having the law within hearing from receiving its instruction in action.
So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
Romans 10:17 · KJV

The word for hearing here belongs to the same Greek family as hear in Galatians. It shows hearing as a way the word reaches you, opening the question of whether the law is truly being received.
