What Does Galatians 5:4 Mean in the King James?
Christ is become of no effect unto you, whosoever of you are justified by the law; ye are fallen from grace.

THE KEY
The Greek makes you the one severed from Christ, exposing the paradox that rule-based alignment separates you from the favor it tries to secure.
THE MEANING
When you seek to be put right through rule-keeping, this verse says the result is separation from Christ and a fall from favor. It places law-based alignment and favor in Christ as opposing grounds, not complementary supports.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Rule-keeping can make me aligned while preserving my place in Christ’s favor.
THE ROOT
κατηργήθητε
katērgēthēte
GROWS FROM
καταργέω
Render inactive, nullify, or sever from; here the Greek clause says, “you were severed from Christ.”
“no effect” in this verse is katērgēthēte. The English makes Christ sound like the one who loses power, while the Greek makes the reader the subject: you are severed from Christ. The wording shows the consequence of this attempted alignment as a relationship rendered inoperative.
ALSO GROWS
argos: idle, inactive
ἀργός
This related word carries the image of something no longer at work, giving “no effect” a sense of being put out of operation.
katargēsis: abolition, nullification
κατάργησις
This word from the same family names the removal of a thing’s force, echoing the severing expressed here.
δικαιοῦσθε
dikaiousthe
GROWS FROM
δικ-
Rightness, justice, what is set in proper relation.
“Justified” belongs to the same word family as words for what is just and for righteousness, which the verse’s language opens as alignment. So the phrase is about the source by which you seek to be set right: instruction is being made the means of alignment.
ALSO GROWS
dikaios: just, right
δίκαιος
It names the state of being in the right, illuminating what being justified is meant to establish.
dikaiosynē: righteousness, justice, alignment
δικαιοσύνη
This word names the condition of being set right, linking the verse’s “justified” directly to alignment.
χάριτος
charitos
GROWS FROM
χαρι-
Favor, gracious regard, freely granted kindness.
Grace is favor, and its word family includes granting something freely and forgiving or releasing someone. Falling from grace is therefore a movement away from favor, not simply a feeling of spiritual failure.
ALSO GROWS
charizomai: grant as a favor; forgive
χαρίζομαι
Favor takes the form of freely giving and releasing, showing that grace is not a wage earned by rule-keeping.
charisma: gift, favor-gift
χάρισμα
This branch presents favor as something received, sharpening the contrast with alignment pursued as an achievement.
THE PATTERN
Alignment is received through trust and favor; when it is treated as a wage earned by rule-keeping, it is no longer favor.
And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness. And if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more grace: otherwise work is no more work. For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.THE THREAD
And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. The same Greek verb behind “is become of no effect” appears here as “disannul” and “make the promise of none effect.” Galatians 3:17 says the law cannot cancel the earlier promise; here, seeking alignment through law leaves the person severed from Christ.
