Hebrew’s word for east also reaches toward what lies before, and the verse closes by naming the separation that gives Lot’s choice a relational consequence.

A choice can carry you somewhere and change who remains beside you. Here Lot selects the whole Jordan plain, travels east, and he and Abram part; the verse holds the chosen land and the changed relationship together.

וַיִּפָּרְדוּ

vayyippāredū

GROWS FROM

פרד

to separate, divide, or part

“separated” in this verse is vayyippāredū. The verb makes the distance between Lot and Abram an explicit parting, not merely a change of location. The same root appears in Abram’s earlier invitation to separate, so the scene’s choice and its outcome are linked by the language of parting.

ALSO GROWS

hippārēd: separate oneself

הִפָּרֵד

Abram uses this same root in Genesis 13:9 when he proposes that they part ways.

nifrĕdū: were divided, separated

נִפְרְדוּ

Genesis 10:5 uses the root for peoples becoming distinct from one another, showing that it can name a division between groups as well as individuals.

מִקֶּדֶם

miqqedem

GROWS FROM

קדם

to be in front or precede; the root also carries the senses east and what is former

The word for east shares a root with words for what comes before or lies in front. English gives only a compass direction, while Hebrew’s word-family holds a wider sense of direction and precedence alongside Lot’s movement.

ALSO GROWS

qedem: east; what is former or ancient

קֶדֶם

The same word used directionally here can also refer to former times, giving “east” a temporal resonance in Hebrew.

qadim: east wind

קָדִים

This branch keeps the directional sense visible while sharing the root that also carries the sense of what precedes.

A choice sets one path in motion and leaves another unchosen.

I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live:
Deuteronomy 30:19 · KJVThe choice is set among distinct paths, with its consequences reaching beyond the chooser.
There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.
Proverbs 14:12 · KJVA chosen way becomes clear through the direction in which it carries the traveler.
No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
Matthew 6:24 · KJVThe verse shows how allegiance to one master separates a person from the other’s claim.
And the LORD said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward:
Genesis 13:14 · KJV

The same Hebrew root ⁨פרד⁩ names the parting in verse 11 and Lot’s separation here. After the separation is named, Abram is told to lift his eyes and look in every direction.
