What Does Genesis 13:16 Mean in the King James?
And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered.

THE KEY
The word “seed” holds both what is sown and the descendants that grow from it, so the promise pictures life multiplying beyond anyone’s count.
THE MEANING
The future carried within you exceeds what you can measure from where you stand. “Seed” also means what is sown: the image holds life scattered into the earth and multiplying beyond a person’s count. Abundance is already present in what is taking root.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that your future is limited to what you can presently count.
THE ROOT
זֶרַע
zeraʿ
GROWS FROM
זרע
To sow or scatter seed.
The same root names both the seed and the act of sowing it, joining what is planted to the life that grows from it. Here, descendants are pictured as seed scattered across the earth: life beyond the reach of counting.
ALSO GROWS
zeraʿ: Seed; offspring.
זֶרַע
The word names both what is planted and the descendants promised to Abram, holding potential and future together.
zāraʿ: To sow; to scatter seed.
זָרַע
This verb shows the movement inside “seed”: life is spread through the earth, where it grows beyond a single point or person.
THE PATTERN
Life carried as seed exceeds the limits of human counting.
And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.Yet the number of the children of Israel shall be as the sand of the sea, which cannot be measured nor numbered; and it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people, there it shall be said unto them, Ye are the sons of the living God.Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable.THE THREAD
And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.Both verses use זֶרַע (zeraʿ), meaning seed or offspring, from זרע (z-r-ʿ), “to sow.” Genesis 15:5 shifts the image from earth’s dust to heaven’s stars, surrounding the promise with life beyond measure.
