What Does Genesis 14:13 Mean in the King James?
And there came one that had escaped, and told Abram the Hebrew; for he dwelt in the plain of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol, and brother of Aner: and these were confederate with Abram.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The escaped man and Abram the Hebrew are both marked by crossing: one by getting out, the other by a name rooted in passing across.
THE MEANING
The person who escapes carries a report to Abram, the one associated with crossing over. Abram dwells among allies, so the news reaches someone within a web of relationship. The verse holds escape, witness, and belonging together.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that escape ends with the survivor: the one who gets out also carries news to someone else.
THE ROOT
הָעִבְרִי
hāʿivrî the Hebrew
GROWS FROM
עבר
Cross over, pass through, or move from one side to another.
“Hebrew” can sound like a fixed label, but its root carries movement across a boundary. Beside the escapee, the title brings crossing into the scene twice, through two distinct roots.
ALSO GROWS
ʿāvar: To cross, pass through, or go beyond.
עָבַר
This verbal form makes the movement in Abram’s title visible.
ʿēver: The far side, or what lies across from here.
עֵבֶר
It shows how the root can name not only crossing but the space reached beyond a boundary.
ʿivrî: A Hebrew, associated with the root for crossing over.
עִבְרִי
This is the word used for Abram, turning his designation into an echo of movement.
הַפָּלִיט
happālîṭ the escapee
GROWS FROM
פלט
Slip away, escape, get out of danger.
“escaped” in this verse is happālîṭ the escapee. The word names someone who has made it out, but its root does not leave the escape as a silent endpoint: this person arrives and speaks. Survival becomes a carrier of news.
ALSO GROWS
pālîṭ: A person who has escaped or survived.
פָּלִיט
This is the noun describing the one who reaches Abram with the report.
pəlêṭāh: Escape or those who remain after danger.
פְּלֵיטָה
The related noun opens the individual escape into the wider idea of survival.
pālaṭ: To slip away or get out.
פָּלַט
The verb keeps the word’s sense of movement out of peril in view.
שֹׁכֵן
shōkhēn dwelling
GROWS FROM
שכן
Settle, dwell, or remain in a place.
“dwelt” in this verse is shōkhēn dwelling. The root grows both into dwelling and into the word for a neighbor, someone who lives nearby. Abram’s location is therefore described through a word-family that can connect inhabiting a place with proximity to others.
ALSO GROWS
shākan: To inhabit or settle in a place.
שָׁכַן
This is the verb-root behind the description of where Abram dwells.
mishkān: A dwelling place or tabernacle.
מִשְׁכָּן
It shows the root’s reach from residing to the place of residence.
shākhēn: A person who lives nearby.
שָׁכֵן
It links dwelling with nearness, resonating with the allies named around Abram.
THE PATTERN
Crossing carries a life beyond a boundary into new ground and new belonging.
And Abram passed through the land unto the place of Sichem, unto the plain of Moreh. And the Canaanite was then in the land. And I took your father Abraham from the other side of the flood, and led him throughout all the land of Canaan, and multiplied his seed, and gave him Isaac.By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went.THE THREAD
And Abram passed through the land unto the place of Sichem, unto the plain of Moreh. And the Canaanite was then in the land.Genesis 12:6 uses עָבַר (ʿāvar, pass over) in “passed through,” the same root behind עִבְרִי (ʿivrî, Hebrew). That echo gives Abram’s title a motion the English leaves faint: he is associated with crossing, now receiving the report of someone who has escaped.
