What Does Genesis 14:8 Mean in the King James?
And there went out the king of Sodom, and the king of Gomorrah, and the king of Admah, and the king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (the same is Zoar;) and they joined battle with them in the vale of Siddim;

THE KEY
The verb behind “joined battle” is עָרַךְ (ʿāraḵ, arrange or set in order), the same verb used for setting a table.
THE MEANING
When conflict takes shape around you, this verse names one of its forms: rulers go out and deliberately array forces for battle. The violence stays concrete, agents, opposing sides, and a place, not a shapeless abstraction.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the idea that violence is only chaos: here, named rulers deliberately arrange the battle.
THE ROOT
וַיַּעַרְכוּ
wayyaʿarkhu
GROWS FROM
ערך
ʿ-r-k
To arrange, set in order, or prepare.
“joined battle” in this verse is wayyaʿarkhu. The Hebrew says the kings arrayed battle against their opponents: conflict here is deliberately arranged. The same root can describe setting a table, holding the ordering of battle and the ordering of provision together without softening the violence.
ALSO GROWS
maʿărāḵāh: Battle array; formation.
מַעֲרָכָה
This noun names the formation that results when forces are arranged for battle.
taʿarokh: You set or prepare.
תַּעֲרֹךְ
In Psalm 23:5, this form describes preparing a table, showing the same root arranging provision in the presence of enemies.
THE PATTERN
War takes shape when powers gather and deliberately array themselves against one another.
And the men of Israel went out to battle against Benjamin; and the men of Israel put themselves in array to fight against them at Gibeah. And the Philistines stood on a mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on a mountain on the other side: and there was a valley between them. And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army.THE THREAD
Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. The same root, ערך (ʿāraḵ, arrange or set in order), describes the kings’ battle array and the table set before the speaker here. These verses place two deliberate arrangements side by side: war and provision, with enemies still present.
