THE KEY
Shalom here does not erase burial: the verse holds death as both bodily laying-down and a going into ancestral belonging.
THE MEANING
This verse lets you hold two truths together now: death is named as going to the fathers in wholeness, and as the body’s burial after a good old age. Belonging and bodily burial stand side by side in the same line.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Death is only severance from every generation before you; this verse also names it as a going to the fathers in shalom.
THE ROOT
שָׁלוֹם
shalom
GROWS FROM
שלם
sh-l-m
To be whole or complete; to make whole.
English “peace” can sound like quiet or the absence of conflict, but שָׁלוֹם (shalom, peace/wholeness) grows from שלם (sh-l-m), the seed of being whole or complete. Here, that wholeness accompanies the going to the fathers while burial of the body is named plainly.
ALSO GROWS
shalem: Whole, complete, sound.
שָׁלֵם
This branch lets “in peace” carry the sense of an intact or complete ending, not only a quiet one.
shillem: To repay, recompense, make good.
שִׁלֵּם
The same root can describe bringing what is due to completion, revealing the fullness carried by shalom.
THE PATTERN
Scripture can name death as bodily burial alongside continued belonging, peace, or rest.
Then Abraham gave up the ghost, and died in a good old age, an old man, and full of years; and was gathered to his people.Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace. And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them.THE THREAD
Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace. Both verses use שָׁלוֹם (shalom, peace/wholeness), from שלם (sh-l-m, to be whole or complete). Genesis places shalom beside going to the fathers and burial; the Psalm names peace as the end of a life.
