What Does Genesis 15:19 Mean in the King James?
The Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites,
The analysis reads the King James wording.
King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The Kadmonites’ name carries both the east and what came before inside it.
THE MEANING
A promise meets a real place, already occupied by named peoples. Their names remain visible in the sentence, giving the promised land a concrete shape.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
This undoes the belief that a promised future begins on empty ground: the names are already there.
THE ROOT
הַקַּדְמֹנִי
haqqadmoni
GROWS FROM
קדם
To precede or come before; associated with the east and what is ancient.
“Kadmonites” in this verse is haqqadmoni. קדם (q-d-m), meaning “before” and “east,” holds direction and what came before in the same word. The English gives an ethnic label; the Hebrew name keeps that wider sense within it.
ALSO GROWS
qedem: East; ancient time, what came before.
קֶדֶם
This word shows how the root carries both a direction and a sense of deep time.
qadam: To precede, come before, or meet.
קָדַם
The verb makes the root’s sense of coming before visible beyond the people-name.
THE PATTERN
Scripture makes a promised place concrete by naming the peoples already associated with it.
And I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey; unto the place of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites. And when he had destroyed seven nations in the land of Chanaan, he divided their land to them by lot.THE THREAD
And the LORD God planted a garden eastward in Eden; and there he put the man whom he had formed. The “Kadmonites” draws on קדם (q-d-m), meaning “before” and “east”; Genesis 2:8 uses the same root in מִקֶּדֶם (miqqedem), “eastward.” The shared root lets the people-name carry the same eastward sense found in Eden’s planting.
