THE KEY
God’s rest is the evidence of completion: the finished work reaches its full measure by ceasing.
THE MEANING
The work reaches completion on the seventh day, and God ceases from it. The day holds both realities at once: nothing further needs making, and the work truly stops. Here, cessation belongs to completed work; it is not a failure to continue.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Rest means something remains unfinished, so stopping is failure.
THE ROOT
שָׁבַת
shavat
GROWS FROM
שבת
š-b-t
To cease, stop, or desist from an activity.
“rested” in this verse is shavat. The Hebrew verb shavat (שבת, to cease) emphasizes stopping the work, not recovering from fatigue. Its branches connect the seventh day’s rest to a marked cessation: the work is complete, and activity comes to an end.
ALSO GROWS
shabbat: Sabbath; a day or observance of cessation.
שַׁבָּת
The name for the Sabbath grows from the same root as “rested,” linking this stopping to a distinct day.
shabbaton: A sabbath rest or solemn cessation.
שַׁבָּתוֹן
This form also marks a time set apart by stopping, showing that cessation can define a period of rest.
THE PATTERN
When work is complete, cessation marks its boundary and becomes a pattern others can enter.
For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.THE THREAD
And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.“Rested” in this verse uses the same Hebrew root, shavat (שבת, to cease), as Genesis 2:2. The next verse adds that the day is blessed and set apart, making the cessation part of the creation rhythm.
