What Does Genesis 2:5 Mean in the King James?
And every plant of the field before it was in the earth, and every herb of the field before it grew: for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The first human is named by the soil and assigned to serve it: adam belongs to adamah.
THE MEANING
Here, growth awaits both rain and a human to tend the ground. The human is not separate from the soil: adam and adamah share the same root, and the verb for tilling also means serving. Life takes shape through received provision and care for the ground.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The lie that meaningful growth is self-produced dissolves here: the field awaits rain, and the ground awaits a human to serve it.
THE ROOT
אָדָם
adam
GROWS FROM
אדם
The root links the human with reddish earth and soil.
“man / ground” in this verse is adam. English separates “man” and “ground,” but their Hebrew forms echo the same three consonants: adam is the ground-being, adamah the soil. The missing worker is not an outsider to a neutral field; the human belongs to the earth he serves.
ALSO GROWS
adam: human, man
אָדָם
The human’s name carries the soil’s sound and substance.
adamah: ground, soil
אֲדָמָה
This is the earth the human is here to till.
adom: red
אָדֹם
The shared root also evokes the reddish color associated with earth.
לַעֲבֹד
la'avod
GROWS FROM
עבד
To work, labor, or serve.
“to till” in this verse is la'avod. The verb translated “till” belongs to the same root as “serve.” The human’s work with the ground is described through the language of service, linking cultivation with care for what sustains life.
ALSO GROWS
avad: to work, serve, labor
עָבַד
It shows that tilling is one form of the broader work of service.
eved: servant, worker
עֶבֶד
The related noun makes the serving sense of the ground-tending verb audible.
THE PATTERN
Growth emerges through the meeting of received provision and human tending.
And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.He causeth the grass to grow for the cattle, and herb for the service of man: that he may bring forth food out of the earth;I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase.THE THREAD
And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.Genesis 2:7 makes the wordplay explicit: the human is formed from the dust of the ground, adam from adamah. That kinship makes the absent tiller in 2:5 feel like the missing relation the field is waiting for.
