What Does Genesis 21:17 Mean in the King James?
And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her, What aileth thee, Hagar? fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the lad where he is.

THE KEY
The boy’s name, Ishmael, “God hears”, becomes the verse’s verb: God hears his voice exactly where he is.
THE MEANING
The voice of a person in distress reaches God in the very place that person occupies. Reassurance reaches Hagar while the boy is still where he is; hearing comes before any visible change in his circumstances.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
God only hears once I have escaped the place of distress. The verse locates the hearing exactly where the boy is.
THE ROOT
שָׁמַע
shamaʿ
GROWS FROM
שׁמע
To hear or listen, with attention that can lead to response.
The Hebrew repeats this hearing: God hears the lad’s voice, then the messenger explains that God has heard him “where he is.” The boy is Ishmael (יִשְׁמָעֵאל, Yishmaʿel), a name meaning “God hears”; the verse makes his name audible in what happens to him.
ALSO GROWS
Yishmaʿel: Ishmael; “God hears” (from shamaʿ, “hear,” and El, “God”).
יִשְׁמָעֵאל
The boy’s name carries the same hearing named twice in the verse: God hears his voice where he is.
shemaʿ: Hear; listen and respond.
שְׁמַע
This familiar form of the root shows hearing as attentive reception, not merely sound reaching an ear.
shemuʿah: A report or tidings; something heard.
שְׁמוּעָה
The root also names what is received by hearing, linking the boy’s voice with the response it brings.
THE PATTERN
A cry is received by God where it rises, before the person is out of distress.
And the LORD said, I have surely seen the affliction of my people which are in Egypt, and have heard their cry by reason of their taskmasters; for I know their sorrows; In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears. And said, Cornelius, thy prayer is heard, and thine alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God.THE THREAD
And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob. The same root, שׁמע (shamaʿ, hear), names God receiving a groaning voice. Here that hearing is focused on one boy and anchored in the words “where he is.”
