This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The Hebrew says they “cut” a covenant at Beer-sheba, then went home: the bond did not require them to stay together.

A bond can hold while the people who make it return to separate places. They make the covenant, then return to their own land; distance and commitment coexist. Departure alone does not dissolve what has been pledged.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie is that a bond is real only while people stay close; here they leave, and the covenant remains.

וַיִּכְרְתוּ

wayyikretu

GROWS FROM

כרת

Cut, sever, or cut off.

The Hebrew phrase is literally “they cut a covenant.” That verb gives the pledge a marked, consequential edge beneath the English “made.”

ALSO GROWS

karat: To cut.

כָּרַת

This is the verb behind the covenant-making phrase in the verse.

keritut: A cutting off; a certificate of divorce.

כְּרִיתוּת

This branch shows the root’s force of severing, sharpening the sense of a commitment made with consequence.

וַיָּשֻׁבוּ

wayyashuvu

GROWS FROM

שׁוב

Turn back; return.

“returned” in this verse is wayyashuvu. The verse uses the same root that names return and turning back. Their return to their own land describes movement away from the meeting, but it does not undo the covenant just made.

ALSO GROWS

teshuvah: Return; turning back.

תְּשׁוּבָה

This noun grows from the same root and makes the verse’s movement of return visible as a recurring idea.

meshuvah: Turning away; backsliding.

מְשׁוּבָה

The root can mark a turning in different directions; here the context specifies a return to their own land.

בְּאֵר שֶׁבַע

Be'er Sheva

GROWS FROM

שבע

The consonants ⁨שבע⁩ carry “seven” and, in the related wordplay, “swear.”

Beer-sheba means “well of seven,” while the preceding verse links the place to the oath sworn there. The shared consonants bring the number and the oath into the same scene.

ALSO GROWS

sheva: Seven.

שֶׁבַע

The chapter recounts seven ewe lambs, which help name the well.

shava: To swear; take an oath.

שָׁבַע

The preceding verse says both parties swore there, tying the place-name to the covenant in this verse.

A covenant can preserve a bond while its parties return to different places.

Wherefore he called that place Beer-sheba; because there they sware both of them.
Genesis 21:31 · KJVThe shared oath gives the place its name and marks the agreement that the next verse calls a covenant.
And they said, We saw certainly that the LORD was with thee: and we said, Let there be now an oath betwixt us, even betwixt us and thee, and let us make a covenant with thee;
Genesis 26:28 · KJVAn oath and covenant bind the parties even as they negotiate their relationship.
For men verily swear by the greater: and an oath for confirmation is to them an end of all strife.
Hebrews 6:16 · KJVAn oath gives a pledge confirming force beyond the moment in which it is spoken.
Wherefore he called that place Beer-sheba; because there they sware both of them.
Genesis 21:31 · KJV

The line before this one explains Beer-sheba through the oath both parties swear. This verse then shows the oath taking covenant form before each party returns to its own land.
