THE KEY
Jehovah-jireh names provision as what happens when God’s seeing reaches the need.
THE MEANING
The mountain holds the near killing of a son and the appearance of a ram in his place together. The name speaks to you now of seeing that does not stop at observation: the need is seen through to provision. Nothing in the name makes the danger unreal; it names what appears within it.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It dissolves the belief that being seen by God means only being observed: this name binds God’s seeing to the appearance of provision.
THE ROOT
יְהוָה יִרְאֶה
YHWH yir’eh
GROWS FROM
ראה
To see, look at, or perceive; here, to see to a need, and so provide.
“Jehovah-jireh / seen” in this verse is YHWH yir’eh. The place-name and the closing phrase share the root ראה: the LORD sees, and what is needed is seen. In this scene, seeing reaches beyond observation as provision comes into view where the danger is real.
ALSO GROWS
yir’eh: He will see; in Genesis 22:8, he will provide.
יִרְאֶה
This is the verb Abraham speaks before the ram appears, joining perception to provision.
ro’eh: One who sees; a seer.
רֹאֶה
This branch gives the name the sense of active attention: the need is held in view.
mar’eh: Sight, appearance, or vision.
מַרְאֶה
What is seen becomes visible; the scene culminates in the provision appearing.
THE PATTERN
God’s seeing is attentive presence that holds need in view and meets it with provision.
And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me?The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry.Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?THE THREAD
And Abraham said, My son, God will provide himself a lamb for a burnt offering: so they went both of them together. The name in verse 14 repeats the verb Abraham speaks in verse 8: YHWH yir’eh, “the LORD will see/provide.” What is voiced before the ram appears becomes the place’s name after it appears.
