THE KEY
The Hebrew repeats one verb where English says “departed” and “went,” holding the servant’s journey, and the master’s good entrusted to him, as one continuous movement.
THE MEANING
What is entrusted to your hand is already moving toward its destination. Service carries another’s good through one continuous journey, so the hand that holds something is not necessarily the hand that owns it.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that service means being trusted with little: this servant carries all his master’s good.
THE ROOT
וַיֵּלֶךְ
wayyelekh
GROWS FROM
הלך
to walk, go, proceed
“departed / went” in this verse is wayyelekh. The same Hebrew verb appears for “departed” and “went,” so English makes one movement sound like two separate actions. The servant takes the entrusted goods and carries them onward in a single, continuing journey.
ALSO GROWS
halakh: to walk, go
הָלַךְ
This is the basic form behind both movements in the verse.
hithallekh: to walk about, conduct oneself
הִתְהַלֵּךְ
This related form extends going into the course a person follows.
עֶבֶד
eved
GROWS FROM
עבד
to serve, work
The servant’s name for his role grows from the same root as serving and work. Here that service carries the full good of another into motion: the servant is entrusted with everything his master sends.
ALSO GROWS
avad: to serve, work
עָבַד
The verb names the action that gives the servant his role.
avodah: service, work
עֲבֹדָה
This noun shows service as the work carried out, not merely a title.
טוּב
tuv
GROWS FROM
טוב
good, goodness
The Hebrew calls the cargo “all the good” of the master, while “goods” in English sounds like inventory alone. The material wealth remains in view, but it is named with the wider word for good.
ALSO GROWS
tov: good, pleasing
טוֹב
This form makes explicit the word for good contained in the description of the master’s goods.
tuv: goodness, good things
טוּב
This noun is the form used here, joining the master’s possessions to the broader idea of good.
THE PATTERN
What belongs to one is entrusted to another’s hand so it can move into its appointed work.
And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.Jesus knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he was come from God, and went to God;As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.THE THREAD
And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.Joseph’s master places all he owns into Joseph’s hand after he serves him; here, the servant likewise carries all his master’s good. Both verses show service and trust joined through the image of a whole estate placed in another’s hand.
