This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

“Errand” (⁨דְּבָרַי⁩, devarai, “my words/matter”) and “Speak on” (⁨דַּבֵּר⁩, daber, “speak”) grow from one root, joining the message to the act of speaking it.

A word that must be spoken can take precedence over the comfort immediately placed before you. The servant holds the meal until he has made his matter known, and his host gives that speech room. The scene attends to what the word carries, not simply to appetite.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

It unsettles the belief that immediate appetite always sets the order; here, the message comes first.

דְּבָרַי

devarai

GROWS FROM

דבר

To speak; a word, matter, or thing.

“errand / Speak on” in this verse is devarai. English turns one root into “errand” and “speak,” making the mission and its telling seem separate. Hebrew keeps them together: the servant’s matter is what he speaks, and the reply repeats that same root.

ALSO GROWS

davar: Word, matter, or thing.

דָּבָר

The servant calls his errand “my words” or “my matter,” so his message is not a separate concept from what he speaks.

daber: Speak!

דַּבֵּר

The host’s “Speak on” uses the same root, answering the servant’s matter with an invitation to voice it.

The word or entrusted work can take precedence over food, and can itself become a kind of nourishment.

And he humbled thee, and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.
Deuteronomy 8:3 · KJVThe verse places bread beside the word and says life is sustained by what proceeds from the LORD’s mouth.
Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts.
Jeremiah 15:16 · KJVWords become something eaten, joining speech directly to nourishment.
Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.
John 4:34 · KJVThe work entrusted by the sender is called meat, just as the servant puts his message before his meal.
Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts.
Jeremiah 15:16 · KJV

The “words” here are ⁨דְּבָרִים⁩ (devarim, “words”), from the same root ⁨דבר⁩ (d-b-r; davar, “word/matter; speak”) heard in “errand” and “Speak on.” In Genesis, the servant speaks his matter before eating; here, the words themselves are eaten.
