THE KEY
The traveler can walk the road, but its advance is entrusted to the LORD.
THE MEANING
You can move along a real path without owning its outcome. The verse gives the LORD the agency to make that way advance, while you remain the one walking it. Progress is received within movement; movement alone does not control the result.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that taking the next step means you alone must secure the outcome: walking the way and making it prosper are distinct.
THE ROOT
מַצְלִיחַ
matsliach
GROWS FROM
צלח
Advance, press forward; by extension, succeed or prosper.
English “prosper” can sound like accumulated success, but the Hebrew verb pictures a way being advanced or brought through. The prayer asks for movement that becomes success; it does not treat success as something the traveler can manufacture.
ALSO GROWS
tsālaḥ: Advance or rush upon with force.
צָלַח
This branch gives prosperity a sense of active forward movement rather than a static possession.
hitzliach: Make succeed; cause to prosper.
הִצְלִיחַ
Genesis 24:21 uses this form for the LORD making the journey prosperous, showing that the way’s success is something brought about.
דֶּרֶךְ
derek
GROWS FROM
דרך
Tread, step along.
Derek is a way made by treading: “my way which I go” binds the path to feet and movement. The verse holds both the traveler’s steps and the route’s uncertain outcome in view.
ALSO GROWS
derek: Way, road, course.
דֶּרֶךְ
This is the route the speaker is walking and asking the LORD to advance.
darakh: Tread, step.
דָּרַךְ
This verb ties a way to the act of walking it, matching “which I go.”
THE PATTERN
A way is walked by human feet, while its direction and advance remain in the LORD’s hands.
The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.THE THREAD
And the man wondering at her held his peace, to wit whether the LORD had made his journey prosperous or not. Both verses use the root צלח (ts-l-ch), meaning to advance or prosper: here the way is asked to advance, and there the journey is described as made prosperous. The repeated root joins the traveler’s movement to the LORD’s action upon the route.
