What Does Genesis 24:66 Mean in the King James?
And the servant told Isaac all things that he had done.
The analysis reads the King James wording.
King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The servant turns what he has done into words Isaac can receive: the whole journey becomes a telling.
THE MEANING
What has been done reaches another person through a telling that carries the whole account; experience becomes something shared. Isaac’s name, יִצְחָק (Yitzchak, “he laughs”), brings laughter into the scene, though the verse leaves his response unstated.
THE ROOT
וַיְסַפֵּר
vayesapper
GROWS FROM
ספר
Count or recount; by extension, relate an account.
“told” in this verse is vayesapper. The servant’s telling carries the sense of recounting: gathering what happened into an account. This root links narration with reckoning, so the telling holds the journey’s parts together.
ALSO GROWS
sefer: Book or written record
סֵפֶר
A record gathers an account so it can be held and received.
mispar: Number or count
מִסְפָּר
The root also names counting, linking the servant’s telling with taking the whole into account.
הַדְּבָרִים
hadevarim
GROWS FROM
דבר
Speak or utter; the related noun can mean words or matters.
The KJV’s “things” renders דְּבָרִים (devarim), which can also mean “words” or “matters.” The verse lets what the servant has done arrive as words Isaac can hear.
ALSO GROWS
davar: Word, matter, or affair
דָּבָר
The same word can name speech and the matter being spoken of.
dibber: Spoke
דִּבֵּר
This verbal form makes explicit the speech carried by the servant’s account.
יִצְחָק
Yitzchak
GROWS FROM
צחק
Laugh or laughter.
Isaac’s name carries the nature of laughter. The account arrives before Yitzchak, while this verse leaves the laughter, and Isaac’s response, unspoken.
ALSO GROWS
tsechoq: Laughter
צְחֹק
The same root names the laughter carried in Isaac’s name.
metsacheq: Laughing or playing
מְצַחֵק
This form shows the root as laughter expressed, though the verse does not say how Isaac responds to the report.
THE PATTERN
A full account turns what has been done into knowledge another person can receive.
And Moses told his father in law all that the LORD had done unto Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel’s sake, and all the travail that had come upon them by the way, and how the LORD delivered them.We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done. And many of the Samaritans of that city believed on him for the saying of the woman, which testified, He told me all that ever I did.THE THREAD
And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.The Hebrew root ספר (saphar) underlies both “tell” and “number” here, as it does the servant’s recounting. One root joins narration and reckoning: to tell the whole is also to count what it contains.
