What Does Genesis 25:23 Mean in the King James?
And the LORD said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The first to emerge does not own the future: the elder is named as the one who will serve.
THE MEANING
Two distinct futures are held within you at once, their difference and contest present before either emerges. Strength is comparative, and first arrival does not settle authority: the elder serves the younger.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Being first guarantees the higher place. This verse overturns that expectation by placing the elder in service to the younger.
THE ROOT
יַעֲבֹד
yaʿavod
GROWS FROM
עבד
Work, labor, serve.
“serve” in this verse is yaʿavod. This root holds work and service together, so the prophecy gives more than a shift in honor: it assigns the elder a role defined by service to the younger. The English word can sound abstractly deferential; the root keeps the working relation in view.
ALSO GROWS
ʿeved: Servant; one who serves.
עֶבֶד
The noun makes the role explicit: the elder is placed in the position of the one who serves.
ʿavodah: Work, labor, service.
עֲבֹדָה
This branch keeps the labor within service visible, giving the reversal a practical dimension.
יִפָּרֵדוּ
yippārēdū
GROWS FROM
פרד
Separate, divide apart.
“separated” in this verse is yippārēdū. Two peoples emerge apart from one shared interior. Their common origin does not erase the division the verse names.
ALSO GROWS
nifrad: Separated, set apart.
נִפְרָד
This form keeps the state of being divided visible in the verse’s description of the peoples.
peridah: Separation, parting.
פְּרִידָה
The noun names the movement from shared enclosure toward distinct peoples.
יֵאָמֵץ
yeʾematz
GROWS FROM
אמץ
Be strong, become firm.
Strength here is comparative: one people is stronger than the other, not strong in isolation. The verse states that comparison separately from the elder’s service, so birth order and strength do not simply dictate who serves whom.
ALSO GROWS
amats: Be strong; strengthen.
אָמַץ
The verb holds strength as something expressed or increased, rather than a permanent rank.
omets: Strength, courage.
אֹמֶץ
This noun carries the root’s sense of firmness and power into another form.
THE PATTERN
The one who appears first or strongest does not automatically receive the higher place.
And his father refused, and said, I know it, my son, I know it: he also shall become a people, and he also shall be great: but truly his younger brother shall be greater than he, and his seed shall become a multitude of nations. So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many be called, but few chosen. But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty;THE THREAD
Let people serve thee, and nations bow down to thee: be lord over thy brethren, and let thy mother’s sons bow down to thee: cursed be every one that curseth thee, and blessed be he that blesseth thee. The same root עבד (ʿavad, serve or work) appears here as “serve.” The earlier verse places the elder in service to the younger; this verse names Jacob as the one people serve, making that reversal concrete.
