What Does Genesis 26:2 Mean in the King James?
And the LORD appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of:
The analysis reads the King James wording.
King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The command refuses a descent into the narrows and makes dwelling possible before the whole land has even been named.
THE MEANING
You meet guidance before the destination is fully specified: dwelling begins while the place is still being spoken. The verse holds a real contrast between descent into constriction and remaining in an unfolding space, where the next word can arrive.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It loosens the belief that uncertainty means you must retreat to the familiar, even when that familiar place narrows you. An incomplete map does not mean there is no place to dwell.
THE ROOT
מִצְרַיְמָה
Mitzraymah
GROWS FROM
צָרַר
ts-r-r
To bind, press in, or constrict.
“Egypt” in this verse is Mitzraymah. In this reading, Mitzrayim carries the image of tzar, narrowness, with the -ayim ending marking the two narrows. The command is more than a change of geography: it refuses a descent into constriction while the place of dwelling is still being spoken.
ALSO GROWS
tzar: Narrow, constricted.
צַר
It gives the name Mitzrayim its image of a narrowed space.
tsarah: Distress, trouble.
צָרָה
It shows how constriction can be felt as distress.
שְׁכֹן
Sh'khon
GROWS FROM
שכן
sh-k-n
To settle, reside, or dwell.
“dwell” in this verse is Sh'khon. The same root connects dwelling with both a dwelling place and a neighbor. The command is therefore not simply to wait; it locates you in a place of nearness while its shape is still unfolding.
ALSO GROWS
mishkan: Dwelling place, tabernacle.
מִשְׁכָּן
The root turns dwelling into a place where presence can remain.
shakhen: Neighbor, one who dwells nearby.
שָׁכֵן
It links dwelling with nearness rather than isolation.
תֵּרֵד
Terēd
GROWS FROM
ירד
y-r-d
To descend or go down.
“go down” in this verse is Terēd. The verse marks a direction as well as a destination: the movement into Egypt is explicitly downward. The contrast with dwelling makes the refusal a change in trajectory, not only a change of address.
ALSO GROWS
yarad: Descend, go down.
יָרַד
This is the verb’s root form and keeps the movement literal.
Yarden: Jordan, the descender.
יַרְדֵּן
The river’s name preserves the same downward movement in its sound and sense.
THE PATTERN
Dwelling in the place where guidance is unfolding can hold you steady before the whole way ahead is visible.
Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father;Trust in the LORD, and do good; so shalt thou dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed.Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.THE THREAD
And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them. The Hebrew root שכן (sh-k-n), meaning to dwell, appears in both verses. Here it describes remaining in the land; there, it describes presence dwelling among people, opening the word beyond a location to the nearness dwelling makes possible.
