This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The promise reaches Isaac in the very posture of sojourning, holding temporary dwelling and future belonging in the same land.

You can dwell in an unsettled place without treating it as evidence of abandonment: presence and promise hold the present together. The land is promised to Isaac and his seed, so this word’s future moves through a family line beyond one lifetime. Abraham (⁨אַבְרָהָם⁩, Avraham, “father of a multitude”) carries that widening future in the name the verse remembers.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The lie is that a season of sojourning means you have no share in what has been promised. Here sojourning and inheritance are spoken together.

גּוּר

gur

GROWS FROM

גור

g-w-r

To reside as a sojourner or newcomer.

“sojourn” in this verse is gur. The root names residence from the position of a newcomer; its noun branch names the person by that relation to a place. Isaac is told to dwell there as a sojourner while the same sentence promises the land to him and his seed, holding present residence and future belonging together.

ALSO GROWS

ger: Sojourner; resident foreigner.

גֵּר

This noun names someone by their status as a newcomer in the place where they dwell.

megurim: Sojournings; places of residence as a sojourner.

מְגוּרִים

This form keeps the focus on dwelling in a place during a period of sojourning.

זֶרַע

zeraʿ

GROWS FROM

זרע

z-r-ʿ

To sow; seed.

The word names both what is planted and offspring, keeping the agricultural image alive inside the family line. Here the promise extends past Isaac through something that is at once seed and descendant.

ALSO GROWS

zaraʿ: To sow.

זָרַע

The verb shows the planting action contained in the image of seed.

zaruaʿ: Sown; planted.

זָרוּעַ

This form carries the seed image into what has been planted and can grow beyond the present.

שְׁבוּעָה

shevuah

GROWS FROM

שבע

sh-b-ʿ

To swear; to make an oath.

The Hebrew uses this root for both the oath and the act of swearing it, binding the pledge to its making. The verse says God will establish the oath sworn to Abraham, bringing a prior promise forward for Isaac.

ALSO GROWS

shavaʿ: To swear; take an oath.

שָׁבַע

This verb is the act named by the oath in the verse.

nishbaʿ: He swore; an oath was sworn.

נִשְׁבַּע

This form shares the root with “oath” in the clause “which I sware,” joining the pledge and its sworn making.

A pledged future extends beyond the present bearer, held by presence and confirmed through an oath.

And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.
Genesis 28:15 · KJVPresence accompanies Jacob through his journey, while the promise of return to the land remains ahead.
Which covenant he made with Abraham, and his oath unto Isaac;
Psalm 105:9 · KJVThe covenant and oath spoken to Abraham continue into Isaac’s life.
Where in God, willing more abundantly to shew unto the heirs of promise the immutability of his counsel, confirmed it by an oath:
Hebrews 6:17 · KJVThe oath confirms that the promise holds beyond the person who first receives it.
That in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the sea shore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies;
Genesis 22:17 · KJV

The same Hebrew word ⁨זֶרַע⁩ (zeraʿ, “seed” or “offspring”) appears in both promises, carrying the image from what is planted to future generations. Genesis 22:17 shows the inheritance moving through the seed, so the sojourn in Genesis 26:3 is held within a promise that reaches beyond Isaac’s own lifetime.
