This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The blessing is an ordering word: it assigns who rules, who serves, and what sustains that order.

This verse shows a spoken blessing reaching into rank, labor, and material provision. Jacob is placed over his brothers, they are assigned to serve him, and grain and wine sustain him. Isaac’s question leaves the unequal remainder in view: what is there to give Esau now?

WHAT THIS UNDOES

This undoes the idea that a blessing is only a warm wish: here, spoken favor assigns rank, labor, and sustenance.

גְּבִיר

gebir

GROWS FROM

גבר

to be strong, prevail

The word rendered “lord” is gebir, from the root of strength and prevailing. The verse links Jacob’s authority to being placed in the position of strength over his brothers.

ALSO GROWS

gibbor: mighty one, warrior

גִּבּוֹר

This branch makes the strength within gebir audible: the lord is the one placed in a position of might.

geber: man, strong or able man

גֶּבֶר

This related word carries the root’s association with strength into the person who bears it.

עֲבָדִים

avadim

GROWS FROM

עבד

to serve, work

“Servants” carries the root of serving and working. The verse makes the relationship concrete: those called Jacob’s brothers are also assigned a role of service beneath him.

ALSO GROWS

eved: servant, worker

עֶבֶד

The singular form shows the personal role contained in the group assignment.

avodah: service, work

עֲבֹדָה

This branch brings out the labor within the status: service is something done, not just a title.

סְמַכְתִּיו

semakhtiv

GROWS FROM

סמך

to support, uphold

The word translated “sustained” comes from the root of supporting or upholding. Grain and wine are presented as what supports Jacob’s place, so the blessing joins authority to the means that maintain it.

ALSO GROWS

samak: to support, lean upon

סָמַךְ

The verb names the act behind “sustained”: providing support that holds someone up.

somekh: one who supports

סוֹמֵךְ

This form makes visible the supporting role that Isaac says he has given Jacob through provision.

A spoken blessing can assign a future place and the provision attached to it.

Let people serve thee, and nations bow down to thee: be lord over thy brethren, and let thy mother’s sons bow down to thee: cursed be every one that curseth thee, and blessed be he that blesseth thee.
Genesis 27:29 · KJVThe blessing names Jacob’s rule over his brothers before Isaac states that this order has been given.
All these are the twelve tribes of Israel: and this is it that their father spake unto them, and blessed them; every one according to his blessing he blessed them.
Genesis 49:28 · KJVJacob’s words assign each son a distinct blessing, showing speech distributing place across a family.
By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come.
Hebrews 11:20 · KJVThis verse names the blessings as reaching toward what is to come.
And the LORD said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger.
Genesis 25:23 · KJV

“Serve” here and “servants” in the current verse come from the same Hebrew root, ⁨עבד⁩ (avad), meaning to serve or work. The earlier words place that service in the family’s future; this verse shows the order spoken into the household.
