This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The Hebrew behind “obey” carries hearing toward response, and here that response is to rise and flee.

A voice names danger and makes the next movement clear: rise, leave, head toward shelter. Hearing here is already response, so listening and movement are not separate acts. The destination matters too: flight has a direction.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The verse undoes the idea that hearing is passive: here, listening to a voice takes shape as rising and flight.

שְׁמַע

shema

GROWS FROM

שמע

Hear, listen, heed, or respond.

The Hebrew verb rendered “obey” also carries the sense of hearing and heeding, so the response is already held inside the act of listening. The related word for a report is something heard; the same root links receiving a message with answering it.

ALSO GROWS

shemuah: Report or message heard.

שְׁמוּעָה

The voice in the verse is something received and acted on, not merely sound in the air.

shomea: One who hears or listens.

שֹׁמֵעַ

The root names the listener as well as the act, keeping attention and response together.

קוּם

qum

GROWS FROM

קום

Rise, stand, or be set up.

“arise” in this verse is qum. The command after hearing is to stand up and move. Related words for “place” and “establish” share this root, connecting the act of rising with where someone stands and what is set in place.

ALSO GROWS

maqom: Place or standing place.

מָקוֹם

The shared root links rising with having a place to stand; this verse moves from standing up toward a destination.

heqim: Set up or establish.

הֵקִים

The causative form carries the idea of making something stand, extending the root’s movement from rising to being set in place.

Protection begins with recognizing danger and moving toward a place of safety.

And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be consumed.
Genesis 19:17 · KJVThe warning gives a specific route away from danger and toward safety.
A prudent man foreseeth the evil, and hideth himself: but the simple pass on, and are punished.
Proverbs 22:3 · KJVRecognizing danger leads to taking cover before harm arrives.
And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child to destroy him.
Matthew 2:13 · KJVA warning turns into immediate movement toward refuge.
Now therefore, my son, obey my voice according to that which I command thee.
Genesis 27:8 · KJV

The same Hebrew phrase, “hear my voice,” appears in both verses. Here, that hearing becomes visible as rising and fleeing: the voice is received as a direction for movement.
