What Does Genesis 29:28 Mean in the King James?
And Jacob did so, and fulfilled her week: and he gave him Rachel his daughter to wife also.
The analysis reads the King James wording.
King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The Hebrew lets “fulfilled” stay concrete: Jacob fills the full measure of the week before Rachel is given.
THE MEANING
A defined interval reaches its full measure before the next giving takes place: Jacob fulfills the week, and Laban gives Rachel as wife too. Rachel’s name is רָחֵל (Raḥel), “ewe,” placing the person at the center of this arrangement inside the story’s pastoral language. The verse holds timing and giving together in one sequence.
THE ROOT
וַיְמַלֵּא
waymallēʾ
GROWS FROM
מלא
To be full; to fill or bring to completion.
“fulfilled” in this verse is waymallēʾ. The verb keeps completion tangible: a set measure is filled through to its end. Here, that measure is a week, and finishing it marks the threshold before Rachel is given.
ALSO GROWS
maleʾ: To be full.
מָלֵא
The state of being full lies inside the verb translated “fulfilled,” making completion a matter of reaching fullness.
mĕloʾ: Fullness; a full measure.
מְלֹא
This noun preserves the image of a measure brought to fullness, like the week in the verse.
שְׁבֻעַ
shavuaʿ
GROWS FROM
שבע
Seven; this consonantal root also forms the Hebrew word for swearing an oath.
The Hebrew word for a week carries the idea of seven, its full counted span. The same consonants also form the word for an oath, an echo of bounded commitment; this verse itself speaks of completing a week, not making an oath.
ALSO GROWS
shevaʿ: Seven.
שֶׁבַע
A week is named through its seven-day measure.
shevuʿah: An oath.
שְׁבוּעָה
The shared consonants create an echo of something bound or pledged alongside the week’s defined span.
THE PATTERN
A set span reaches its fullness at the threshold where what follows becomes present.
For Sarah conceived, and bare Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him.And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel. But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law,THE THREAD
And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth. Both verses use מלא (maleʾ), “fill”: Genesis 1 fills the waters with living creatures, while Genesis 29 fills the measure of a week. The shared verb lets “fulfilled” retain the image of a whole measure brought to fullness.
