What Does Genesis 3:24 Mean in the King James?
So he drove out the man; and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden Cherubims, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The root of “keep” shows the reversal: the human once keeps the garden, and now guardians keep the way to life.
THE MEANING
You meet the tree of life as real but inaccessible: the man is driven out, and the way is guarded by cherubim and a blade turning in every direction. The same keeping that once names the human’s place in the garden now names the guardians’ work at its boundary.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
The way to life cannot be secured by taking it for oneself; here, the tree is guarded.
THE ROOT
לִשְׁמֹר
lishmor
GROWS FROM
שמר
to watch over, guard, or keep
The same שָׁמַר (shamar, “keep” or “guard”) is used when the human is charged to keep the garden in Genesis 2:15 and when the way to the tree is guarded here. The word holds care and protection together, so the guardians now occupy the keeping place once given to the human.
ALSO GROWS
shomer: a keeper or guard
שֹׁמֵר
It names the one who watches over what is entrusted, like the guardians stationed at the way.
mishmeret: a charge, watch, or guard duty
מִשְׁמֶרֶת
It shows “keeping” as an entrusted responsibility, the role that shifts from the human to the guardians.
הַחַיִּים
ha-chayyim
GROWS FROM
חיה
to live or be alive
The root ties “life” to living beings as well as to the state of being alive. The tree is therefore a source of continued living in the verse’s own scene, and its way is guarded.
ALSO GROWS
chay: living or alive
חַי
It describes life as a present condition, the very thing associated with the tree.
chayyah: a living creature
חַיָּה
It carries the same root into the realm of living beings, linking the tree’s life to embodied life.
THE PATTERN
Life is tied to what is guarded, and access to it has a boundary.
And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.Blessed are they that do his commandments, that they may have right to the tree of life, and may enter in through the gates into the city.THE THREAD
And the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.The same שָׁמַר (shamar, “keep” or “guard”) appears in both verses: the human is placed in the garden to keep it, and guardians are stationed to keep the way to the tree of life. One root links the human’s charge inside the garden to guarded access beyond its boundary.
