THE KEY
The Hebrew word for God “taking” the wealth away is also a word for delivering someone from a grip.
THE MEANING
This verse puts a claim of belonging beside a call to act: what God has taken from their father belongs to the women and their children, and Jacob is to do what God has said. The women name themselves and their children as the destination of the transfer.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
A father’s possession is not final simply because he once held the wealth: the women claim that God has moved it into their inheritance and their children’s.
THE ROOT
הִצִּיל
hitsil
GROWS FROM
נצל
natsal
To snatch away or rescue; to deliver from a grasp.
“taken” in this verse is hitsil. The verb comes from נצל (natsal), a root that can describe taking something from a hand and delivering someone from danger. The women immediately name the new destination, themselves and their children, so “taking away” carries the movement of a transfer, not mere disappearance.
ALSO GROWS
wayyatsel: Removed from its former holder.
וַיַּצֵּל
Genesis 31:9 uses this same root for God taking the cattle from their father and giving them to Jacob, making the transfer explicit.
lehatzilo: To bring someone out of another’s grasp.
לְהַצִּילוֹ
Exodus 3:8 uses this root for bringing people out of the Egyptians’ hand; here, its rescue sense opens beneath the removal of the wealth.
THE PATTERN
God’s deliverance takes what is held in a constricting grasp and moves it toward a new belonging.
Thus God hath taken away the cattle of your father, and given them to me.And I am come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land unto a good land and a large, unto a land flowing with milk and honey; unto the place of the Canaanites, and the Hittites, and the Amorites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites. And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom: to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.THE THREAD
Thus God hath taken away the cattle of your father, and given them to me.Genesis 31:9 uses the same root for “taken away,” then says the cattle are given to Jacob. The direction becomes visible: the removal in this verse is a transfer into the women’s and their children’s future.
