What Does Genesis 31:38 Mean in the King James?
This twenty years have I been with thee; thy ewes and thy she goats have not cast their young, and the rams of thy flock have I not eaten.

King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
The Hebrew describes the flock’s lost young with a word for bereavement, placing the prevention of animal loss in the language of family grief.
THE MEANING
Your care shows in what remains alive and in what you leave untouched: the young are not lost, and the rams are not consumed. The years beside another person are measured not only by time, but by the life preserved and the portion not taken.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
Time spent in service is not proof of care by itself; the verse points to what remains alive and unconsumed.
THE ROOT
שִׁכֵּלוּ
shikkēlû
GROWS FROM
שׁכל
sh-k-l
To bereave or deprive of offspring.
“cast their young” in this verse is shikkēlû. English makes this sound like a biological event, but the Hebrew verb also describes people bereaved of children. The root frames the flock’s young as lives whose loss carries the weight of grief, not just a reduction in property.
ALSO GROWS
yeshakkēl: Cast her young; deprive of offspring.
יְשַׁכֵּל
Exodus uses the same root for animals losing their young, making the connection between these passages explicit.
shikkaltem: You have bereaved.
שִׁכַּלְתֶּם
In Genesis 42:36, this form describes losing children; the same root holds flock loss and family grief together.
THE PATTERN
Faithful keeping is shown in lives preserved and in refusing to consume what belongs to another.
Be thou diligent to know the state of thy flocks, and look well to thy herds.I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.THE THREAD
And Jacob their father said unto them, Me have ye bereaved of my children: Joseph is not, and Simeon is not, and ye will take Benjamin away: all these things are against me.The verb used here for the ewes and goats not losing their young reappears in Jacob’s words for being bereaved of children. Hebrew gives the flock’s loss the same weight-bearing language as family grief, so this preservation is more than good inventory.
