And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother unto the land of Seir, the country of Edom.

THE KEY
Before Jacob reaches his brother, he releases a message into the distance between them.
THE MEANING
A difficult approach can begin while you are still at a distance: a word moves ahead of you toward the person you are approaching. Here, sending and release meet in the message that crosses the space before the meeting itself.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the belief that contact begins only face-to-face: a message can make the first crossing.
THE ROOT
וַיִּשְׁלַח
vayyishlach
GROWS FROM
שלח
shalach
Send forth, release, let go.
The English “sent” holds a wider movement: שָׁלַח (shalach) means to send forth or release. The message released ahead of Jacob carries the first approach toward his brother before Jacob arrives.
ALSO GROWS
shillach: Sent away; released.
שִׁלֵּחַ
This form makes the releasing inside Jacob’s sending visible: the message goes forth ahead of him.
Shiloach: Sent forth; the name of a watercourse.
שִׁלֹחַ
The same root names waters as sent forth; here, a message is sent forth toward Esau, carrying an approach across distance.
אֱדוֹם
Edom
GROWS FROM
אדם
adam
Red; redness.
Edom carries the same consonants, א־ד־ם, as אָדָם (adam, human or ground-being) and אֲדָמָה (adamah, ground or soil). The destination’s name echoes the red earth and human origin held in those related words.
ALSO GROWS
adam: Human; ground-being.
אָדָם
Edom’s consonants echo the name for the human being, linking the destination’s name with human nature.
adamah: Ground, soil.
אֲדָמָה
The shared consonants connect Edom’s redness with the ground from which Adam is named.
THE PATTERN
A messenger sent ahead opens a way through distance before the encounter arrives.
The LORD God of heaven, which took me from my father’s house, and from the land of my kindred, and which spake unto me, and that sware unto me, saying, Unto thy seed will I give this land; he shall send his angel before thee, and thou shalt take a wife unto my son from thence.Behold, I send an Angel before thee, to keep thee in the way, and to bring thee into the place which I have prepared. As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee.THE THREAD
The LORD God of heaven, which took me from my father’s house, and from the land of my kindred, and which spake unto me, and that sware unto me, saying, Unto thy seed will I give this land; he shall send his angel before thee, and thou shalt take a wife unto my son from thence.Abraham says that God will send a messenger ahead; the Hebrew verb uses שָׁלַח (shalach), the same root as Jacob’s “sent.” The root links these scenes through a message released before the traveler arrives.
