This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The favor Jacob seeks becomes a form of safe passage: he can leave the escort behind if he remains welcome in Esau’s eyes.

You see support arriving through welcome, not only through the people who walk beside you. Jacob turns down Esau’s offered escort and asks to remain in his favor as he goes on.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief undone is that safety always requires visible protection; here, Jacob can decline the escort while asking that the welcome remain.

GROWS FROM

חנן

ḥ-n-n

To show favor or graciously regard someone.

“grace” in this verse is ḥēn. The noun chen names favor as welcome received in another’s regard. Jacob does not ask for more people around him; he asks to find that favor in Esau’s eyes, where the offered escort becomes unnecessary.

ḥānan: To show favor; to be gracious.

חָנַן

חַנּוּן

This adjective names the quality of the regard Jacob hopes to find in Esau.

Favor makes welcome visible in another’s regard and opens a way forward through relationship.

But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.
Genesis 6:8 · KJVNoah, like Jacob, finds favor in someone else’s eyes, and that welcome marks a way forward.
And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him: and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he had he put into his hand.
Genesis 39:4 · KJVJoseph’s favor in another’s sight opens into trust and responsibility.
And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.
Luke 2:52 · KJVFavor appears as a growing welcome held in relationship with both God and people.
But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.
Genesis 6:8 · KJV

The Hebrew repeats the same phrase in both verses: find favor in the eyes. Jacob’s plea to Esau and Noah’s finding favor with the LORD share the word chen, joining two scenes through the language of welcome received in another’s regard.
