This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

Rachel’s two sons hold both her prayer for increase and her grief at the cost of that hope; Benjamin’s name carries the turn from sorrow to the right hand.

This line keeps longing and grief inside one family story: Joseph bears the name Rachel gives in hope that another son will be added, and Benjamin bears the name Jacob gives after Rachel calls him “son of my sorrow.” Her sorrow is named, but it does not become the boy’s final name. Loss can mark a beginning without owning the whole identity that follows.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

A painful beginning must be the name by which your whole life is known.

יוֹסֵף

Yosef

GROWS FROM

יסף

Y-S-P

To add, increase, or do again.

Joseph’s name echoes Rachel’s hope that the LORD add another son. Beside Benjamin, it makes the family line carry both the desire for increase and its arrival.

ALSO GROWS

yōsēf: May he add; he will add.

יֹסֵף

This is the form in Rachel’s words, “The LORD shall add to me another son” (Genesis 30:24), revealing the hope held inside Joseph’s name.

tosefet: Addition; supplement.

תּוֹסֶפֶת

This branch keeps the sense of something added, showing why Joseph’s name carries Rachel’s longing for another child.

בִּנְיָמִין

Binyamin

GROWS FROM

ימן

Y-M-N

The right side or right hand.

Benjamin combines ben, “son,” with yamin, “right hand.” After Rachel names him from her sorrow, Jacob’s name for him holds a different image: the right hand, associated with strength and favor.

ALSO GROWS

yamin: Right hand; right side.

יָמִין

This is the element of Benjamin’s name that gives the verse its image of a son at the right hand.

yemini: Right-handed; of the right side.

יְמִינִי

This related form extends the right-side image in Benjamin’s name beyond a mere label.

A name can preserve a painful moment while a later name opens a wider identity.

And it came to pass, as her soul was in departing, (for she died) that she called his name Ben-oni: but his father called him Benjamin.
Genesis 35:18 · KJVThe same child bears the name Rachel gives from sorrow and the name Jacob gives afterward, so one painful moment does not hold the whole story.
Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.
Genesis 17:5 · KJVAbram receives a name that carries a wider identity than the one he has borne before.
He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it.
Revelation 2:17 · KJVThe promised new name suggests that what is known of a person can open into something more.
And she called his name Joseph; and said, The LORD shall add to me another son.
Genesis 30:24 · KJV

Joseph’s name carries Rachel’s spoken hope that the LORD add another son. Beside Benjamin, that name lets this short family line hold the desire and its fulfillment together.
