This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

The verse names one destination twice: Luz is the place, but Bethel, “house of God”, reveals its deeper nature.

Luz and Bethel name the same ground, yet Bethel names it by the presence it holds: the house of God. Jacob arrives with the whole company beside him, so the verse places an entire gathering within that name. It speaks now wherever a place’s deeper nature is disclosed beyond its surface name.

בֵּית־אֵל

Bêt-ʾEl

GROWS FROM

בית

b-y-t

House, home, household.

“Beth-el” in this verse is Bêt-ʾEl. Bethel joins ⁨בֵּית⁩ (bêt, “house of”) with ⁨אֵל⁩ (ʾEl, “God”), naming the place by the presence it signifies. The house-word can name both a dwelling and the people who belong within it, resonating with Jacob’s arrival alongside everyone with him.

ALSO GROWS

bayit: House, home, or household.

בַּיִת

This is the dwelling-word within Bethel’s name; the place is identified by what it holds.

beit-av: Father’s house or family household.

בֵּית־אָב

The same house-word can include a whole household, echoing the company that arrives with Jacob.

יַעֲקֹב

Yaʿaqov

GROWS FROM

עקב

ʿ-q-b

Heel; following at the heel, with the extended sense of supplanting.

Jacob’s name carries the heel: it evokes one who follows close behind and grasps another’s heel. That name arrives at Bethel, where the destination is named by the house of God rather than by Jacob’s own nature.

ALSO GROWS

ʿāqēv: Heel.

עָקֵב

The heel is the bodily image held inside Jacob’s name.

ʿāqav: To follow at the heel or supplant.

עָקַב

This verb gives the name its sense of following behind and taking another’s place.

A place becomes a meeting point with God when its deeper identity is recognized.

And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful is this place! this is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.
Genesis 28:17 · KJVThe place is recognized as the house of God and the gate of heaven.
And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.
Exodus 3:5 · KJVThe ground beneath Moses is named as set apart by God’s presence.
And he saith unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Hereafter ye shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of man.
John 1:51 · KJVThe image of heaven opening and messengers ascending and descending echoes Bethel as a meeting point between heaven and earth.
And he called the name of that place Beth-el: but the name of that city was called Luz at the first.
Genesis 28:19 · KJV

This verse names the two identities in the opposite order: Luz is the city’s earlier name, and Bethel is the name Jacob gives the place after encountering God there. Genesis 35:6 holds both names together, letting the place-name and its deeper nature appear at once.
