This verse in the Selah Decoded Version

Jacob’s name carries the heel-grasper, but here blessing comes to him through God’s appearing, not through his own grasp.

Jacob’s name carries the image of following at the heel and grasping; here God appears to him again and blesses him. The encounter shifts the movement from securing to receiving: blessing is given directly, not taken from another. For you now, an old pattern of grasping does not have to be the way blessing reaches you.

WHAT THIS UNDOES

The belief that you have to take or outmaneuver someone else to receive blessing is undone: the one named for grasping is blessed directly by God.

יַעֲקֹב

Yaʿaqov

GROWS FROM

עקב

ʿ-q-b

Heel; following at the heel, and by extension supplanting.

The name Jacob carries the heel-image of following close and grasping. Here, the one marked by that name receives blessing directly, opening a movement from grasping toward receiving.

ALSO GROWS

ʿaqev: Heel.

עָקֵב

The name’s heel-image begins with a concrete picture of following behind.

ʿaqav: To follow at the heel; to supplant.

עָקַב

This verb makes the name’s grasping quality explicit, as in the description of Jacob in Genesis 27:36.

וַיְבָרֶךְ

wayevarekh

GROWS FROM

ברך

b-r-k

To bless; the same consonants also form the word for knee.

“blessed” in this verse is wayevarekh. The blessing verb shares its root with the word for knee, giving blessing a bodily image of bending. What Jacob once grasped is now given to him as a blessing.

ALSO GROWS

berekh: Knee.

בֶּרֶךְ

The related knee-word gives the blessing root its bodily image of bending.

berakhah: Blessing.

בְּרָכָה

This noun makes the gift named in the verse part of the same root family.

וַיֵּרָא

wayyērāʾ

GROWS FROM

ראה

r-ʾ-h

To see; in this form, to be seen or appear.

The form translated “appeared” comes from the root for seeing. Hebrew holds seeing and becoming visible in the same root, so the encounter is God made present to perception.

ALSO GROWS

raʾah: To see.

רָאָה

The root names the act of seeing that receives what appears.

marʾeh: Sight; appearance.

מַרְאֶה

This branch carries both the act of seeing and what is seen.

roʾeh: One who sees; seer.

רֹאֶה

The seer shares the same root with the appearance in the verse.

Blessing is given through divine presence, so it need not be secured by grasping.

And Jacob asked him, and said, Tell me, I pray thee, thy name. And he said, Wherefore is it that thou dost ask after my name? And he blessed him there.
Genesis 32:29 · KJVJacob receives a blessing in an encounter, echoing the direct gift in Genesis 35:9.
The LORD bless thee, and keep thee: The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee: The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.
Numbers 6:24-26 · KJVThe blessing is joined to God’s face turned toward the person receiving it.
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ:
Ephesians 1:3 · KJVBlessing is spoken of as something God gives, received in relationship rather than taken by force.
And he said, Is not he rightly named Jacob? for he hath supplanted me these two times: he took away my birthright; and, behold, now he hath taken away my blessing. And he said, Hast thou not reserved a blessing for me?
Genesis 27:36 · KJV

Genesis 27:36 exposes the heel-root in Jacob’s name by calling him a supplanter and tying that name to taking a blessing. Here, that same Jacob receives blessing directly when God appears, so the name’s old pattern does not exhaust his story.
