King James Version The King James Version, first published in 1611. Selah Verse shows the standard text.
THE KEY
Joseph’s pursuit repeats the brothers’ own Hebrew verb for going, so he walks into the path they have just named.
THE MEANING
A direction can reach you before its significance does: you can follow a path toward a place whose meaning is still hidden. The verse holds hearing, moving, and finding together while leaving the encounter’s full consequence unopened.
WHAT THIS UNDOES
It undoes the assumption that you must understand a path before you arrive where its meaning opens.
THE ROOT
נֵלְכָה
nēlĕḵâ
GROWS FROM
הלך
halakh
to walk, go, or move along
“go / went” in this verse is nēlĕḵâ. The brothers’ invitation, “Let us go,” and Joseph’s action, “he went,” are forms of the same root. Their proposed movement becomes his actual movement, binding his pursuit to the destination they name.
ALSO GROWS
nēlĕḵâ: let us go
נֵלְכָה
This is the brothers’ proposed movement, spoken before Joseph follows their route.
wayyēleḵ: and he went
וַיֵּלֶךְ
This form repeats their verb as Joseph sets out after them.
אַחַר
ʾaḥar
GROWS FROM
אחר
ʾaḥar
to be behind or come after
Joseph moves behind his brothers, and this root family also reaches into what comes afterward. The verse’s spatial “after” sits beside a Hebrew word family for the later end, while the meaning of this following remains undisclosed.
ALSO GROWS
ʾaḥarît: latter end, afterpart, or future
אַחֲרִית
This branch extends “after” toward what lies later, resonating with the future still hidden in Joseph’s journey.
ʾaḥarôn: last or later
אַחֲרוֹן
This branch carries the sense of coming after, the same relation that places Joseph behind his brothers.
THE PATTERN
A path can begin as simple following and reveal its meaning only later.
He sent a man before them, even Joseph, who was sold for a servant:Now therefore be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that ye sold me hither: for God did send me before you to preserve life. And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert.THE THREAD
Now therefore be not grieved, nor angry with yourselves, that ye sold me hither: for God did send me before you to preserve life.Joseph later names his journey as being sent ahead to preserve life, opening a deeper meaning in his going after his brothers here. At Dothan, the path is still unfolding.
